Most of us are caught up in the rat race of life, going through the daily routines day by day for our bread and butter, well, maybe squeezing in some time to do something that we enjoy doing occasionally.
Amongst my besties, I’m already one who enjoyed a lot of freedom mainly because I don’t have children, and that I’ve got a superman husband who takes exceptionally good care of me. All 3 of my besties are full time working mums, leaving little or no time for themselves. Sometimes I really wonder how the working mummies can work in the day and come back to tend to the needs of their families at night.
Anyway, I was supposed to go on a short trip but it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 situation. But since I already took leave, I decided not to cancel it but use it as a self-love day for myself, just doing whatever I want without disturbance. Working adults rarely have the time to spend a solo day doing everything for themselves, since workdays are filled to the brim, and weekends are for friends and family and running errands.
I’m so much of an introvert and my favourite place is my home. Therefore, no surprise that I spent my whole day at home. My day was uneventful, but I felt so well-rested and contented. Regardless of whether you prefer to head out to meet people or stay at home to read, I really think that everyone of us should take a day off occasionally, free your mind from the daily stresses and do things that you enjoy.
Here’s what I did on my uneventful rest day that was perfect for me:
1. Sleep in
I slept a lot when I was a kid if I had nothing on it was very hard to wake me up… to the woes of my parents. I won’t wake up before 11 am. While I can go out for lunch and dinners with my family, it was hard for my father to get me (and my mother… I’m sure I got this from my mother haha) out to have a family breakfast together on weekends. I’m always glad that my elder sister was (still is) an early bird so at least she could accompany my dad.
I thought I will outgrow this but it never happened. My husband will always tell his friends the story of how he tried to wake me up to go out for a hearty breakfast together when we first started dating. Of course, it was an impossible feat for him to get me to wake up, let alone go out, on a weekend. And that was his first, and very last attempt.
Damn, I even told my friends before I never hate work or working. I only hate waking up early in the morning.
So on my free day, I slept in! I didn’t sleep till 2 pm just like how I did when I was in the Uni. I didn’t set an alarm and I woke up naturally and very well-rested at 11.47 am. As happy as a lark.
That said, please do not misunderstand. As long as I have appointments or any other responsibilities, I’m almost never late unless there are factors that are beyond my control. People who are always late are my biggest pet peeves. I really hate those who do not respect other people’s time.
I’m one of the blessed ones who never had to care about what I eat or whether I exercised enough because of my high metabolic rate. And that said, I barely exercised or workout ever since I left Junior College and said goodbye to my PE teacher.
However, as age caught up with me, I realised that the numbers on the scale started increasing even though there were no changes to my lifestyle. Lo and behold, it is finally time for me to control my diet and start exercising to keep in shape. I’m not used to it, but I guess I can’t fight aging and I’ve got to accept watching what I eat and having a workout routine as part of my life now.
I just hope I won’t give up too fast. Please nudge me if you see me getting out of shape ok.
So I lay my exercise mat in front of the TV and followed some Youtube workout tutorials for about an hour or so. But everytime I lay down on the exercise mat, my dog climbs on me to sit of my belly. It was hilarious and really adorable of her to do that, but that effectively ruined the rest of my workout and I could only do leg lifts after that.
3. Bathed my dog
My little darling Haru needed a bath that day and that’s what we did after my workout. She is always very well-behaved during her baths. However, after bathing and drying her thoroughly, I couldn’t find her brush! I left her messy like a siao char bor until my hubby came back and found the brush for me! Heh! (That’s when le hubby would say I cannot survive without him… hahah…)
4. Made my own healthy lunch
I’ve been careful about what I eat nowadays, unlike how I can eat fast food for 7 days straight when I was younger. I’m not particularly strict, though, it is hard to change overnight. But I do try to eat less processed food, meals that are low in carbohydrates (shoo tummy shoo!), and stick to healthier options.
It’s hard to get healthy food if you eat out most of the time. Since I had the day off, I prepared my own healthy lunch. I’m a very bad cook so although it was healthy, it wasn’t yummy at all. I can’t complain when I consciously decided to air-fry everything out of sheer laziness. Heh! Don’t judge me! At least I cooked!
I dumped my salmon into some Korean multipurpose sauce, my broccoli into some olive oil, oyster sauce, and Lao Gan Ma chilli, and seasoned one beaten egg with light soy sauce and pepper. And everything went into the air fryer. I didn’t take a photo of my bad cooking since it didn’t look appealing at all. Anyway, it worked for me and filled my tummy! Lol. Did I mentioned that I was already close to 3 pm when I started eating?
5. Watched my favourite sitcom
I needed to Netflix while eating. But instead of watching highly raved “Crash Landing on You”, I went to rewatch Big Bang Theory. In fact, I’ve been watching it a lot since the episodes are short and I didn’t have to devote too much time, not do I need to focus too much on it when I need to relax.
I went on to mindlessly watch a four or five Big Bang Theory, laughing at the characters’ antics and the funny plot, while enjoying my lunch and coffee. How shiok was that?
6. Read my book
I read a lot. And I can’t sleep without reading for an hour or two before bedtime. I spend most my free time reading Chinese novels and my Kindle is the best gift from my hubby ever. There are many good online novels from China it is time to explore the rich world of their literature if the only Chinese author you can name is Jin Yong. It’s a whole new world out there.
Many would think that I’m English speaking and reads English books and all, but really, no. The English novels that I read perhaps takes up only 10% of all my readings.
So after watching a few episodes of Big Bang Theory, I pretty much spent my time reading until my hubby came home from work. We had dinner together and watch some variety programmes before returning to my book again to end my day.
And that’s pretty much how an ideal day for me would be like. Nothing exciting but perfect for me. How’s yours like?
