Taiwan Family Trip 2016 ~ What to Do with your Kids in Kenting

My Favorite Photo taken in Kenting, Taiwan

It’s a brand new year! Happy 2017!  This is my very first time writing a blog.  I hope this will help you in planning for your upcoming family holiday. Alright, let’s go!

We couldn’t decide where to bring our kids for holiday.  Maybe Gold Coast, Taipei or Boracay? Maybe spending sometime out in the sun, sea and sand?  Hmmm… Considering my 2 kids, Summer and Ocean, I guess Boracay is out.

We thought that Gold Coast would be the best choice! When we announced to the kids, my little boy, Ocean sensibly said: ” I am still not tall enough for many of the exciting rides in the theme parks. Mummy Daddy, can we go there when I grow taller? If not, I will be sad standing and watching everyone play.”

And so, we decided on Taipei! Time to find out what are the things that they could do there.

I heard that many parents bring their kids to Taipei just for shopping and night markets. Since this is a trip specially for my kids, I want them to fully enjoy it. Therefore, shopping is our last priority.  I started my research on fun places for kids in Taiwan and we also decided to travel from the Southern part of Taiwan to the Northern part ~ Kenting, Kaoshiung, Hshinchu and Taipei.

Below are my quick tips on things to do prior your Taiwan Free & Easy Trip:-

  • Rent your Wifi Egg. You can book this from www.changirecommends.com and can conveniently collect and return it right at the airport. (For those who are still new to Wifi Egg, it allows you to stay connected on the go overseas. It will be easy for you to connect to GPS, check location and access websites.)
  • Visit Taiwan Tourism Bureau (TTB) located at Chevron House, #10-01, 30 Raffles Place S(048622).  They have freebies giveaways, such as, free tickets to attractions, airport transfer etc.  You may contact TTB at 6223-6546 for the latest freebie giveaway and availability to avoid disappointment.  ** Remember that you will need to have your air ticket confirmation numbers and hotel bookings with you to claim the freebies.

My tips for mummies and daddies to better enjoy the trip :

  • Be mentally prepared for no shopping to prevent disappointment LOL. Kids generally do not like shopping. And if you do get a bit of time to shop, treat it as a bonus!
  • Have flexibility in your planning. Kids do get tired on overseas trips and we need to give up some planned itineraries for them so they can rest well and enjoy fully.
  • Mentally prepare the kids. Communicate to your kids that the tour isn’t just about play and Theme parks. It’s also about experiencing the different cultures in other countries (eg. food, people, way of living, scenery which are different from Singapore)

Alright! Taiwan….Here We Come…..

Day 1: Singapore – Kaohsiung – Kenting

We collected the rented wifi egg at the airport, had a quick bite in McDonald’s, bid farewell to my in-laws (kids’ ah gong ah ma) and boarded the plane excitedly.

Summer and Ocean got really excited upon hearing the landing announcement.  Suddenly, Ocean burst into tears. Although he knew how to release the pressure in his ears during landing, the trick didn’t work this time. His nose bled and Summer and I panicked. Fortunately, Daddy Nick remained calm and got everything under control. Ocean even started joking about it once the plane landed.

We arrived safely at Kaohsiung International Airport. My kids were alert enough to spot a familiar face during disembarkation (Felicia Chin from Mediacorp!!). They were eager to snap a photo with her but were too shy to approach her. They finally got mummy to approach her for the shot while Daddy Nick is trying to rent a car at the airport.

After some searching, our busy Daddy finally rented a car.  This was his first time driving in a left-hand drive car. Nick connected to Google Map and started navigating towards our destination, Kenting. Exciting but a little stressed, I could only help to look out for the road signs written in Chinese.

As he got used to the left-hand drive pretty fast, I decided to make full use of my time in the car. I cleaned my face with facial wipes, put on a facial mask and did some light makeup after that. Kids were busy playing and observing the surroundings from time to time.

After about 2 hours of driving, we stopped for late lunch. There were many small restaurants in the vicinity but as soon as the kids knew that they could eat at 7 Eleven, they ignored the rest of the choices. Well, we could only dine in 7 Eleven overseas and so we decided to just let them experience that.

Daddy, Summer and Ocean got their lunch. Ocean got his favourite Pasta while Summer and Daddy got their Hotdog buns. Oh…. and they definitely remembered to get some desserts.

Caffine + Instant Noodles = Satisfaction! lol

Finally,  I got to taste the Taiwan Famous instant noodle “Yi Du Zan 一度赞”  after hearing so much about it from my hubby. It’s Yummy and Spicy! I ate one everyday during this trip ;p

We continued our Journey to the South after lunch.  Hopefully we can reach the resort soonest…..

We drove along the coastal road and the scenery was simply incredible! We stopped by the roadside to take a break while enjoying the see breeze and scenery.

These were not planned in the itinerary but they were nice add-ons!

And we stopped again….lol

Just abit more and we would be reaching the Resort!

Yeah…we finally arrived! Howard Beach Resort, Kenting.  We reached a lot later than expected due to all the unplanned stops.  You can check out the resort at http://kenting.howard-hotels.com/Unique furniture at the hotel lobby.

It was a very big and spacious resort. Our room was huge and very family-friendly. It came with 2 king-sized beds with an awesomely beautiful view!
The sun set pretty early and we enjoyed the peace and view at the balcony. Oh my, it was really quiet out here in Kenting. We could only hear the breeze and birds chirping away.

We wanted to bring the kids to the pool but the temperature was really low.  Summer and Ocean were quite tired after the long drive and they decided to play in the room until dinner time. Daddy had arranged for a dinner gathering with his friends, followed by a nice stroll along the night market.

Wow! His friend sure knows what he likes.  He was immediately attracted to the custom Harley Davidson Bikes display at the entrance.

It was a sumptuous meal!  Great food and nice catch up after a long day of travelling.  We were told that this is quite a famous restaurant in Kenting and the boss of the restaurant is a Harley lover!

After dinner, we drove back and parked our car in the Resort. Since the Kenting Night Market is nearby, we decided to enjoy a breezy walk out instead of taking the free hotel transport. Well, on second thoughts, I think “WINDY” is a better description than breezy.

The kids got easily excited about everything new in the foreign country.  Daddy and Ocean were enjoying the music played by the stalls along the street.  Just be yourselves and enjoy like the 2 of them! Summer and I were enjoying ourselves, laughing at our funniest Daddy and Son! LoL

These fashion accessories handmade by this gentleman in denim, were beautiful and intricate…

Like mummy like daughter….Summer couldn’t resist desserts…

Summer and Ocean did some shopping for Souvenirs and experienced what night life is about in Taiwan! They started young, don’t they?

Daddy met another group of friends who were coincidentally in Kenting at the same time. We brought the kids to a pub with live music, performances and magic show. All of us had a great time!  Ocean was wowed by the magic show!

Before we ended the night, our friends requested to see Ocean performing live! I was surprised that my boy agreed to the request instantaneously. Enjoy the dance video!

Stay tuned as Day 2 will be even more exciting with photos and information of where to go!
