So last July, I started searching for the cheapest flights to BKK. I settled for Airasia as it has the cheapest deals at that time( before the airasia disaster). The only con was that Josaeus’s ticket was considered adult! In total we paid about 187SGD per person, 2-way with 20kg check in baggage, insurance & seat selection.
Everything went smoothly through out and I’m happy to say the locals are very friendly and helpful! At the airport, they have priority queue catered for elderly/parents with kids/disabled at the arrival/departure hall so we won’t have to wait too long.
My mom bought Jo a airasia plushie! it’s very cute but alittle pricey. 350 Baht. Jo loves it! I’m glad Jo sat thru the flight alright, no crying or was he in any discomfort.
However, do book a flight that lands in Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) instead of Don Muang Airport (DMK) Bangkok. As Suvarnabhumi airport rail link is directly connected to the airport, this way you don’t have to get stuck in the traffic by bus or taxi.
Here’s the map:
We had to take a bus to the Bang Sue BTS station and Train down to Mo chit Station and change to Green Line as my hotel is located beside Ratchaprarop Station. Very Troublesome especially with our huge lugguages! A kind citizen guided us all the way from Bang Sue to Phaya Thai Station when he is going the other way. Really sweet of him, wish I could Thank him again personally! Well anyway, Thank You kind Man!
Hotel wise, I booked KC place thru Agoda. It’s a 3 star and I paid about $42SGD per night. It’s affordable and clean. If you’re not planning to stay in the hotel too much except for sleeping, KC place is good.
Benefits of KC place
. It’s just beside Ratchaprarop station
. 2 bottles of complimentary water daily
. free Wifi ( not too stable thou)
.in room safe
.good water pressure in the toilet
.small freezing compartment in fridge
.5 mins walk to Pratunam nightmarket & wholesale market
.10mins walk to platinum fashion mall
.Restaurant and massage parlor just down stairs
. There’s also a 24hour restaurant mins away
*Do note there’s a 1000Baht refundable deposit upon check in per room.
Tip before booking:
you can leave a remark to the hotel for large bed, higher floors, non smoking & quiet rooms. The hotel will try to fulfill your requests whenever they can.
For my case, I noted that I wanted a quiet room with large bed and I’m glad KC place made it possible! Also I very much needed the freezing compartment in the mini fridge as I bought chicken meat from Big C to cook for Josaeus’s porridge/soup.
As expected, Pratunum Wholesale market was extremely crowded in the morning. I went at 5/6am with my mom and its impossible for me to bring Josaeus along! Lots of locals buying in bulks at super cheap prices to sell at platinum or night markets! So do walk around the morning wholesale markets before going to Platinum Mall. You’ll definitely find what you want here at a fraction of the price.
sorry for the blurry photos. I was pushed all the time and can hardly stand still to take a picture.
Best time to go Pratunam Morning wholesale market: 6am
The morning wholesale market closes as early as 8am! so do make sure to wake up early.
I got 2 shirts at 80Baht(less than $4 SGD) each here! Mom got 6 pouches at 100Baht($4SGD)
Oyes, I managed to try the Famous Wonton Mee everyone was raving about in Pratunam. The shop was filled with Singaporeans, left and right haha.
The same stall that sells this Wonton Mee, has this very yummy dish * I forgot the name. Maybe you can just show them the picture?
Very unhealthy but very very delicious! extremely tender and savoury. Oh my I want to go back.
Tourists favourite mall
I only got 1 shirt(100Baht),2 shorts(180 baht each),3 sets of lingerie(300baht) from here. It’s alot pricier so I prefer the wholesale market or night markets.
I tried the desserts at level 5/6 food court. It sucks. Those roadside ones are so much yummier and cheaper. There’s also a downside to buy at the food court here, we had to buy a card and deposit money inside to buy with that card. I find it really troublesome and time wasting..
The next few days we went to Chatuchak, Chinatown, Big C Supermarket, Paragon & Central World.
I love chatuchak but it’s so freaking hot there! Super crowded too! Not surprised thou. Chatuchak has everything you need from pottery to animals!
Here’s the map of Chatuchak. It doesn’t look as neat as the maps thou. I was going round in small circles and couldn’t find the popular coconut ice cream everyone was raving about I’ll be back soon!!
Chatuchak has really nice and cheap Children’s apparels compared to Platinum. I didn’t buy any for Jo at Platinum but bought lots of stuffs here for Jo. When you buy more you can bargain more! There’s one shop where I bought 3 shirts for Jo at only 250 Baht. Quality,Prints and Stitches are fantastic. Even better than Cotton on’s.
Shoes were from Chinatown at 80 Baht.
I also bought 2 inspired Haivanas Slippers for my mother in law and myself. One of the shops was selling them at only 80 Baht while the other shops was 120 Baht! I’d window shop for a round first to compare prices then buy on my second round. I saved alot and get to focus on what I was looking for.
The Jeans at Chatuchak is only slightly cheaper around 200 Baht while Platinum sells at 250 Baht. I bought from Platinum due to difference in Quality. If you’re looking for denim shorts, buy from Pratunam Morning Wholesale market! I bought 3 for 400 Baht. Those that is commonly seen in Blog shops that sells for $24.90 SGD each!
Then we went Central World for Naraya!
There was a Snoopy Heaven outside!
Naraya was filled with Chinese Tourists. They filled their baskets as thou the items was free. OMG. My mom and I went there for 2 consecutive days. On the first day we went to shop for our own stuff and second day for her friends.
I bought a Sun hat for SGD $9.90? But It was very useful even in Singapore! Money worth for the Quality!
We had dinner at Coca which was very yummy nor cheap..
Further down you’ll reach Big C across the road!
It’s just like NTUC, Cold Storage or Giant in Singapore. I went crazy with the instant noodles and Bento Cuttlefish. Wanted to buy more but my lugguage doesn’t have enough space :'(
There’s street stall everywhere in Bangkok! This is the kind of sight I see every single day. Ah I miss Bangkok.. Wanted to go back again this month but there’s bombing in bangkok area.. so to be save.. I’ve decided to save up more for next years trip to Taiwan!
Walk over to Siam Paragon for Krispy Kreme! We bought a dozen of Glazed! Ate too much and felt sooooo Gelat! But it was super yummy! I’ve always loved sugar donuts since young. It was so much cheaper in Thailand compared to Singapore! If I remember correctly it’s 4 Baht for 1 glazed while in Singapore it’s $2.70 for 1 glazed? Crazy huge difference! That’s why we bought a dozen. haha!
For Chinatown Bangkok, there isn’t any train station nearby yet. you have to cab over. From my hotel it was about 90 Baht by meter.
Best time to go Chinatown: 4pm onwards.
Things to buy there: wholesale kids shoes, toys, wholesale blankets, wholesale hair accessorize and fresh fruits and dried goods!
The food there is said to be yummy too! I was so lazy to cab down at the end of the day so didn’t get to try..
I bought 6 brushes for 80 Baht only! There’s a provision shop that sells super cheap kids toys. those kind of mini cars and lego blocks! 1 for 5 Baht and I bought 200Baht worth of toys there. The quality isn’t very good thou, you pay for what you’ll get.
Had lunch at this Wonton Mee stall. I personally prefer this than the famous one at Pratunam. Due to the location, it isn’t known by many tourists.
Foods to try when you’re in Bangkok:
These are found everywhere! Really sweet! I ate 1 pack everyday for 5 days straight! I even bought some freshly harvested one back to Singapore. Price wise isn’t much cheaper than Singapore’s but a lot sweeter!
2) Grilled Pork with Glutinous Rice.
Street stalls around Pratunam sells them! Really yummy!
3) Steamed sweet corn!
OMG! this is super delicious.. so much better than Singapore’s cup corn( those bought from Pasar Malam is nothing compared to these)
4)Seafood Kway Tiao?
I’m not too sure about the name thou. This was bought from the restaurant below my hotel. I love this! Ate it as dinner for 2 nights.
I bought 5 packs of 12s and it isn’t enough!
6) Preserved Radish.
I bought them from Chinatown. Tasted very good when fried with egg or porridge. It’s Crunchy and salty!
7) Water Zong Zi.
It’s made on Glutinous Rice. Tasteless and chewy. Tastes great with Sugar or Kaya. I bought 2 bundles back!
7) Pad Thai.
It’s stir fried noodles. Available through out Bangkok. I love it with lots of tao geh.
There was so much more I wished to share but I kinda forgot some of them. These are all I could remember.. Sorry! I did my best to remember..
