Why extreme diet is totally a no-go to slim down?

Are you planning to go on diet? Are you wondering why can’t I be as slim as others?

Many girls think that they can slim down real fast by skipping meals. We often tempted to cut our calorie intake to be as skinny as those celebrities. Yes, you can lose pounds by not eating. But you might be unlucky enough to suffer from diseases, rebound weight gain or mood swing.

Below is my dieting story N years ago…

“I remember how my relatives laughed at me every Chinese New Year when I was young. They used to say I grew horizontally 🙁 To be honest, I was really upset with their comments. So, I usually will not comment directly on anyone’s figure except for my boyfriend, oppppssss.  Not to forget that I used to hunchback and my parents always hit me from the back without any notice. However, I didn’t think of dieting until Secondary 4. It all started with the desire to be like SNSD (every girl wants to have their bodies, right?). So, my friend and I started to diet and exercise in order to slim down!

Me in year 2009, I don’t think I was that fat, but maybe just a little chubby. 
What did I do back then? I cut down more than 50% of my food intake immediately. For example, I could finish up to 2 bowls of rice before that, and I only had 1/2 bowl of rice during dieting process. I read all those articles about how to slim down, what food should I avoid, what korean artists have for their meal etc. So, I started to eliminate all the carbo in my meal, and I really starved myself until my stomach had finally adapted with the food intake portion. 

I did many exercises as well. For example, dancing in the room like a crazy, yoga, workout and whatever can help in slimming down. I gained my interest in exercising throughout the process. 

After months of exercising, my hunchback problem got so much better. Yup, I lost like 4 kg in 2 months. However, I started suffering from gastric, my stomach was bloated EVERY single day. Even though I had a flat tummy, but I looked like a pregnant lady with that bloated stomach. Secondly, I was emotionally down with slight depression, probably due to heavy school workload as well. Thirdly, I always felt that my body was swollen. It was really true but no one really believes in me! That’s because everyone thought that I had already gone crazy with dieting, and whatever I thought could be really extreme.”

Sadly, I am still suffering from gastric, heartburn and ingestion at times.
My story can be boring but please take note of my sincere advices to all of you,

Why dieting is a no-go to slim down?

1. It hurts your stomach 
I am not sure how you stomach will react after skipping meals. For me, heartburn happened and the discomfort really made me sleepless at night. When your stomach stays empty for a long time, it reacts by causing stomach pain as a cue for the need of food. Hunger pains are not serious but prolonged starvation can lead to other medical conditions like increase stomach acid production and digestive issues.

2. You will be craving for food ALL THE TIME
I could be thinking of what I wanted to eat for the next meal in the morning, afternoon and night  because I had been suppressing my appetite most of the time. So, when you finally reward yourself with food, you tend to eat even more.

3. It slows down your metabolism

Surprisingly, severely restricting calorie actually prevents our bodies from burning the unwanted fat stores effectively, which means the weight loss slows down. If you were to go back to normal eating, you will gain weight faster as your metabolism will be slower than before.

4. It can lead to eating disorder
It is important to include that prolonged starvation induces change in cognition, behaviour, and interpersonal characteristics. After long period of fasting, you might feel that more weights must be lost in order to achieve a skinnier look, and you will never be satisfy with you own body, even though you are already skinny! That can be really scary!

With the introduction of social media, particularly Facebook and Instagram, we are exposed to edited images and thin ideals. The appearance-focused nature of social media has reduced individual’s self esteem and tend to look for ways to achieve a better outlook. It is definitely not wrong to improve your appearance, but do know your limits and do not go beyond it. I would suggest the practice of healthy diet and regular exercise instead of going purely on extreme diet. 

Lastly, please love your own body and be confident about yourself. Because you are the one and only you in the universe!
