When you think of sweets, one of the brands that may come to mind is Ricola. I have always loved their herb drops, made in Switzerland. This brand has been around for 85 years! As probably one of the oldest sweet brands around, they are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. The original and legendary 13 herb mixture is naturally grown in the Swiss mountains. The herb specialties are known for their unique taste as well as their soothing effect. With Singapore’s hot weather, I always have a packet of Ricola sweets in my bag to soothe my throat. I am known as the “sweet girl” in the office. Not because I am very sweet looking or what not. Hahaha! But because I am always offering my Ricola sweets to other people around me whenever I am popping one into my mouth!

Also, having the sweets and carrying them wherever I go is a lifesaver especially when my 2 year old son is throwing a tantrum or making a fuss. I can always catch his attention by offering him a Ricola sweet. Great way to make him quiet and happy 🙂 🙂 🙂 It’s a great snack without a doubt.

This is the bestseller, the Ricola Original Herb, which has always celebrated its success on the basis of its unaltered taste, effect and shape – truly a unique product that Ricola’s customers came to love at first taste: a love that continues today. It’s truly amazing how Ricola has grown from a small bakery that produced sweets to a medium-size producer of herbal specialties with an international reputation.

What I also love about Ricola is that all of Ricola herbs originate from controlled natural cultivation in the Swiss mountains. Ricola has been supporting the natural cultivation of herbs without the use of pesticides for more than 30 years – the company is therefore regarded as a pioneer of Swiss herb cultivation. So at least I can rest assured that their sweets are made of high-quality natural ingredients.

Ricola pays great attention to the quality and natural condition of its other basic ingredients and uses no artificial colorings or flavorings. At least I know the Ricola brand of sweets are very safe for me and my family.

Not only that, their whole company is very green on sustainability; their environmentally friendly concept deeply moved me too. From cultivation to the harvest and the final quality control tests at the factory and production site, Ricola herbs must pass several quality tests. In addition to this uncompromising quality standard, Ricola’s sustainable and ecological principles define the entire production process as well as all other commercial activities. This includes measures to reduce consumption of raw materials, energy and water, as well as optimizing logistical efficiency and wastewater disposal. Through the Emil und Rosa Richterich-Beck Stiftung and the Ricola Foundation, Ricola also supports cultural and charitable projects.

The blend of soothing Ricola herbs made from 13 herbs was created exactly 75 years ago by Emil Richterich and is still kept top secret. This blend is used in the Ricola products. Numerous positive properties are attributed to the 13 plants.

Horehound − invigorates the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates the appetite, promotes the secretion of bile and loosens bronchial catarrh.

Burnet − soothes coughs and clears infections of the upper respiratory tracts.

Speedwell − has diuretic and expectorant properties.

Marshmallow − is especially soothing for irritable coughs.

Lady’s Mantle − is said to alleviate menstrual pain or hormonal changes due to the menopause. This herb is also anti-inflammatory and soothing for the mouth and throat.

Elder − boosts the immune system and can prevent colds. The herb also encourages perspiration and reduces feverish cold and flu symptoms.

Mallow − counteracts inflammations and soothes colds and diseases of the respiratory tract. This herb also gives relief for gastrointestinal complaints and acts as a disinfectant for the mouth.

Peppermint − has disinfectant properties and gives soothing relief for colds, catarrh and hoarseness. The herb can also counteract cramps of the gastrointestinal tract.

Sage − effective against catarrh of the upper respiratory tracts and counteracts night sweats.

Yarrow − not only heals wounds but is an anti-inflammatory, counteracts cramps and aids digestion. This herb helps the circulation and eases varicose veins and swollen feet.

Cowslip − stimulates the production of mucilage. Secretions become thinner and mucilage is released to give relief for tickly coughs.

Plantain − provides relief for coughs and acts as an expectorant, especially counteracting bronchial catarrh and inflammations of the throat. This herb also gives soothing relief for catarrh in the upper respiratory tract.

Thyme − an anti-inflammatory, has disinfectant properties and also gives relief from irritable coughs. This herb is also said to have a soothing effect on the nerves and to provide relief from cramps or pain during the menstrual cycle.

Previously, I did not know about all these wonderful advantages of the herbs used to make the sweet. Now I know in more detail how all these herbs are helping me after so many years! I am truly ‘wowed’ by all these herbs now. Normally people would think that great herbs or medicine must taste awful. For Ricola, this is not the case for sure.
