Bale Udang Bali Leading Thematic Restaurant Review
Bale Udang is Bali’s award winning restaurant for the Bali Tourism Award 2015-2016 and is Bali’s Leading Thematic Restaurant. Bale is the traditional Balinese hut therefore the concept of the restaurant is that you get to dine in these beautiful cool huts made with wood and straws.
Udang means prawns so therefore, do expect a whole extensive range of seafood dishes other than the traditional dishes available there.
Each month they will have a new menu of the month to recommend some of the popular dishes tagged with promotions as well. Bale Udang is not just the place popular with tourists to experience the Balinese atmosphere and local food, they are also popular place with the locals so locals can sign up for membership of which they could join for discount, updates and promos. Avilla Hospitality is the management for Bale Udang (www.avilla-hotels.com)
Other than the big parking spaces outside the restaurant, the entrance of the restaurant foyer is very huge and grand too. In the evenings, they also have live traditional music being played at the foyer entrance of restaurants. Bale Udang have one outlet in Kuta and one in Ubud. The one that I went to is the one at Kuta which is conveniently located in the center of Kuta. I felt that this is a restaurant which you must go and experience for yourself when you are there. Photos alone will not do justice to it.
This is the main sitting area which can accommodate up to 120 pax. This Main area is also very appropriate for events which require big capacities such as birthday party, wedding, family dinner, etc. Bale Agung which located in the poolside gives a natural and fresh feeling while dining.
Bale Udang also have the biggest kids’ playground available in Bali, Bale Udang Mang Engking reinforces its position as the multi segmented restaurant. This kids’ playground is located on the North side of the restaurant with 118m2 in size. For parents who look for party venue, Bale Udang also provides party package choices with affordable prices.
The whole restaurant is mainly outdoors except they have one air conditioned room which is like a function room for private dining events. I like this concept to be dining beside nature and the pond being in the middle of the greenery and all. There were so many little huts and big huts for bigger groups all over the area. Whether it is lunch or dinner. The place looks completely different.
Bale Udang Mang Engking provides bale/gubug with pergola on outdoor area. Above shows the three big bales can accommodate up to 21 people each, as well as nine smaller bales that can accommodate up to nine people each. With the experience of enjoying dishes above fish pond, it is a pure unique experience which you ought to go try for yourself.
The whole restaurant is indeed super huge. There are 72 seats available in Bale, 50 seats in Big Bale or Garden Bale, 32 pergolas or tent.
Since I went in the afternoon and it wasn’t too much of a crowd, they let me have the small bale dining area that day. For small bale, usually need to have minimum capacity of 4 pax and minimum consumption of IDR 600,000. Which is about $60 SGD.
Here comes the best part! Food! Wooohooo! Bale Udang have a very wide choice of food with extensive menu. It was hard to decide what I wanted to eat so I asked the staffs for recommendations and had some of the signature dishes since my stomach space was limited. I would expect if you go as a bigger group it would be better so you could try out more of their dishes.
Even their menu are made with straws. So traditional!
This is the traditional crackers with chili, a snack to bite on before the main food arrives.
This is their signature main dish – Udang Bakar Madu – Honey Grilled Prawn, IDR 135k (About $13). A must try when you visit. Sweet and freshly BBQ grilled prawns with a hint of smokey flavor to it.
Another of their specialty is the Sop Udang Kelapa Muda – Prawn, Squid, and Mushroom Soup served in a whole coocnut IDK 98k. About $10. The coconut skin tasted so nice and soft in the soup adding the twist of sweetness in the soup which is sweet and sour like the traditional thai tom yum soup.
Jamur Goreng Tepung – Crispy Fried Mushroom IDR 32K. About $3. I thought it has been fried to perfection. Fluffy, crispy and non oily. Great nice chili dipping sauce that comes with it.
Cumi Sambal Matah – Grilled Squid in Sambal Matah IDR 72K. About $7. Chewing and tangy.
Tape Gulung Keju – Fried Fermented Cassava in Spring Roll Skin Topped With Caramel Sauce IDR 35K. About $3.50. It has been an interesting taste for me this. A little bitter and sweet at the same time. Worth a try as this is their most traditional dessert.
After the meal, it’s time for me to feed the fishes. So many of them! 🙂 I would think my son would really enjoy feeding the fishes too if he were there with me.
