3 Cafes in Singapore Worth Your Tummy Space

A very short blog post revealing my go-to places for good desserts (plus these are all stunning cafes worthy of your instagram feed) that you won’t regret going.

ONE.   Paddy Hills – for the BEST Pancake in Singapore

Jacelyn X Favorite Dessert in Singapore

I don’t know if I would regret publicizing this place because this is my ULTRA FAVORITE café. Everything I tried (mains, desserts and even drinks) at Paddy Hills are all SO GOOD and photogenic-looking so far. The Berry Ricotta pancake is crispy on the outside and buttery soft in the inside; it melts in your mouth and has a generous serving of berries! Freshly made upon ordering, there are only limited pieces per day. Curious Palette has a similar version but Paddy Hill’s version wins hand down. To date, I think this is really my NUMBER ONE favourite dessert in Singapore (not joking).

Visit them at 38 South Buona Vista Road Singapore 118164

TWO.   The Plain Jane & Rich & Good Cake Shop – for Swiss Roll

Jacelyn X The Plain Jane

Located within Serangoon heartlands lie a small cosy café which specializes in a handful of different flavours of Swiss Rolls (Earl Grey, Matcha, Strawberry Yogurt, Thai Milk Tea, etc). And on an usual basis, you will get to meet Jane, the lady boss, whom is a passionate entrepreneur who shares about her bakes with a lot of enthusiasm. On my second visit, she nicely offered 2 new flavours for our table to try (all thanks to K whom is a regular at The Plain Jane!). All the flavours were good, but I only have eyes on the original flavour of their Swiss Roll. Each swiss roll is pillow soft and the inner filling is smooth and creamy (not jiat-lat at all)! A pity that The Plain Jane doesn’t have Durian flavoured Swiss Roll; so if you are a fan of Durian (like me!), you can also try Rich & Good Cake Shop for your durian fix.

Visit The Plain Jane at Block 211 Serangoon Ave 4 #01-10 Singapore 550211 and Rich & Good Cake Shop at 24 Kandahar Street Singapore 198887.

THREE.   Sinpopo Brand

Jacelyn X Sinpopo

Many cafes dot along Joo Chiat Road, as I was there walking towards Awfully Chocolate wanting to get my favourite HEI ice cream, my friends and I stumbled upon Sinpopo Brand Café and was drawn in. There were many seats available on a weekend night, and we decided to give it a try. We ordered the Frisee Salad with Crispy Muah Chee, Orange Kaya Pisang Crème Brulee (too sweet to my liking L), Pandan Tart, Katong Jelly drink and Sng Muay Pop. Everything we tried was ordinary but the PANDAN TART was da bomb! (Not sure if my review is bias because I love everything pandan flavoured) The pandan tart has a light pandan frangrant and it has a velvety smooth and soft texture which balances out nicely with the tart pastry.

Slightly over-priced, but I am planning a second trip to try their Pandan soufflé and Durian Pengat which were both sold out that night. If any of you have tried, please write me your reviews too heh.

Visit them at 458 Joo Chiat Road Singapore 427671

I am looking forward to more sweet adventures this year, talk to me and write to me at phangjacelyn@gmail.com about your favourite dessert haunts as well!

Macau Recommendations X Jacelyn Phang

All thanks to Singapore Women Association, I had the privilege to be invited to participate in Women Sports Festival 2017! Organized by Macau Sports Council and the Women General Association of Macau, I had the opportunity to gather with many wonderful women all around South East Asia region for a healthy cause.

Jacelyn P X Macau Sport Festival

The Singapore team had great fun performing at Senado Square and attending the Macau Sports Festival Health Seminar which focused on an interesting discussion on the topic of Aerobic Exercises.

Jacelyn X Singapore Women Association

And of course I took time to visit several good places which I would love to recommend! Here’s 5 recommended things to do in Macau.

NUMBER ONE. Portuguese Egg Tart

Jacelyn X Macau Egg Tart - Lord Stow

I am the biggest egg tart fan so Portuguese egg tarts are a must have for me! A sinful treat, you’ll not be disappointed with Lord Stow Bakery’s version of the edible icon for Macau. The most convenient for you to get your egg tart fix is at The Venetian Hotel, where you get to make your rounds for your shopping too. Their Ice Milk Tea is also one of the best that I had in Macau; you will regret not trying it! Lord Stow has a couple of outlets in the city, click here for the list of their outlets. P.S. I thought the egg tart at Koi Kei Bakery was very ordinary though.

NUMBER TWO. Casino Hop

Jacelyn X Wynn Palace

I visit Macau regularly but I haven’t gotten bored of it because the new hotels spring out so fast! This year I visited The Parisian and Wynn Palace both of which are really beautiful especially the latter.

For an exceptional dinner experience, I had dinner at Wing Lei Palace at Wynn Palace. Serving Cantonese fine-dining, I enjoyed their roast meat selection the best! Every details count at this restaurant, I loved that their flower pieces on each table are all fresh blooms and every item in the restaurant are coordinated to match their theme colors. You also get to see the Performance Lake water show every 20 minutes, dining there is definitely a feast for all your senses. Not forgetting that service was exceptional as well (FYI, I am not paid to say this haha). Super romantic if you want to impress your date! 😉

The Venetian and The Galaxy have elaborate decorations, if you haven’t been to Macau; they are worth a visit too!

NUMBER THREE. Drinks & Party

I visited SKY 21 for a rooftop bar experience and Club Cubic @ Hard Rock Hotel this trip.

Jacelyn X Sky 21 and Club Cubic Nightlife Macau

SKY 21 bar is a cosy place which suits couples and love birds. With a lot of sofa seats, it is not too noisy and really comfortable to chill at. There weren’t anything spectacular as you can’t see most of the view unless you step out to the alfresco area where most patrons use it as the smoking area. Service was slightly below expectations but the cocktails like Victoria Secret and Angel were quite pleasant.

To party your night away, I recommend Club Cubic; Macau’s biggest club in both hype and space. The party starts after 12am; enjoy Ladies Night on Friday nights and DJ acts on most Saturdays. Entry fee was 250 Macau dollars inclusive of a drink. My greatest catch that night was seeing TVB actor Lawrence Ng!!

NUMBER FOUR. Seafood!

Jacelyn Macau Seafood Recommendation

Don’t miss feasting on seafood treats when in Macau. My must-haves are steamboat, huge oysters, Angus Beef and Canadian Geoduck!

NUMBER FIVE – The House of Dancing Water

Macau X The House of Dancing Water

The House of Dancing Water is the world’s largest water-based show that is so breathtaking and spectacular! The story depicts a love story of a survivor of a shipwreck falling in love with a beautiful princess; but like any fairy tale story, the happily ever after ending never comes easily. The duo was cruelly separated and their love were tested by the Princess’s evil stepmother, the Dark Queen. Filled with heart-stopping stunts, I think this is really one of the best performances I’ve watched in recent years!

Last tip to share, purchase SIM card with data plan from the vending machine in the airport instead of from touting individuals in those car rental booths. For some petty cost savings, the SIM card that I got from the airport counters doesn’t work  well. It taps on 3G network, can be used to send messages but connection to Instagram and Facebook is pathetically limited 🙁 My other girl friends whom had bought the cards from the vending machine has high speed 4G instead!

If you are in Macau to try your luck, here’s wishing you the best too!

Korean Ouni Skincare Course Review X Jacelyn Phang

(SP) Tucked in the eastern part of Singapore, I visited one of Ouni Beauty’s many Training Centres. Entering the location, there is a very simple, cosy yet spacious enough classroom for the course.

Ouni Beauty X Classroom

Being in the beauty industry, I am always eager to learn new technology, gain new knowledge and meet like-minded individuals, so I was very excited to be attend one of the class! I dropped by on a regular weekday to attend the last day of the class where Teacher Youmi taught the Korean Skincare course. Graduated from Ewha Womans University, Teacher Yumi is the co-founder of Ouni Korea whom has also chalked up many years of experience as a Beauty Trainer and consultant internationally. She has a gentle demeanour and seemed very easy to talk to; I was told that Teacher Youmi could converse fluently in Korean, Mandarin and English.

Ouni Beauty Skincare Workshop

The knowledge taught is great if you are starting out in the beauty industry and has zero experience in the industry. Teacher Youmi was always patient with the hundred questions thrown by students and is very hands-on with the actual demonstration of the various Korean Skincare Treatments. For those who wish to learn about the Korean beauty industry trends, the course will cover the below treatments:

(1)    Korean Water Shine BB Covered Treatment

Water Shine BB Covered Treatment

If your dream is to obtain the flawless and dewy skin that Koreans have, you no longer have to travel to Korea to find out all about the Korean skincare secrets that helps you be naturally beautiful. With Ouni expanding to South East Asia, you can get to attend classes in Singapore, Taiwan, China and Korea.

(2)    Korean 24K Gold Mask Treatment

Korean 24k gold mask treatment

This treatment is for lifting and firming purpose to help reduce the appearance of lines whilst brightening the skin.

(3)    Korean MTS Facial Lift

Miss Youmi hands on demonstration

An 8 hours class, the class starts from morning 9am till 6pm.  The class that I attended had about 10-12 students, most of them young, in their twenties. For a leisurely class to enrich your beauty knowledge or learn something new; don’t miss exploring opportunities with Ouni Beauty. I heard that their company has since expanded to have more than 50 outlets and 9 academies in the Asia region, and there are more than three thousand of students whom had attended their courses.

Ouni Class

Graduates will also receive a certificate from the HQ in Korea upon completion of the course. Besides the Skincare course, Ouni also specialize in Korean Semi-Permanent Embroidery and Korean Eyelash Extension courses if you are interested. Eyelash Extension at Lushlashh

(SP) It’s been awhile since I last updated this space as I had been tasked for several overseas assignments by my company to conduct the Mid Brain class in different cities. This time I am back in Singapore for two weeks and I hope I can complete as many work as I would like.

Before I go for any overseas assignments, I would like to get my eyelash extension done as it saves a lot of my make up time. This is extremely important because I can sleep in a little longer and save A LOT of my time on eye make-up. All I have to do is dust some loose powder on the face and brush a little blusher on the cheeks; and I will be ready for my day!

I was invited to Lushlashh which is centrally located at 13A Bali Lane.

Jacelyn Phang X Lushlashh

Stepping in, the outlet is spacious and roomy; there is also a waiting area with sofa, so whoever who is accompanying you for the session can wait comfortably too. I am super afraid of the cold, so I love that I can tuck under their comfy blanket when I am on the treatment bed while getting my lashes fixed.

Here’s a quick guide and some tips for you to note if you haven’t done eyelash extension before:

  1. Have an idea of what you want

Jacelyn X Lushlashh Eyelash Extension Menu

If not, fret not too; before the treatment, you can speak to the therapist to understand the lashes they have and pick one from their selection. I like my lashes dramatic otherwise I see no point in doing it. In my opinion, if you want something that others can barely notice, you might as well just use a mascara to achieve the same effect for yourself. But not everyone thinks the same, so Lushlashh has a variety of choices for you to pick. As for myself, I decided to go for C-curl 12mm for a natural yet WOW effect.

2.       Never open your eyes during the treatment

A fuller set of lashes instantly!
A fuller set of lashes instantly!

Lushlashh specializes in strand by strand eye lash extension using products directly imported from Korea. Applying a full set of lashes takes about an hour so you get to have a shut eye while having it done. I think I fell asleep halfway haha. Do avoid opening your eyes during the application so that no glue will get into your eye!

3. Always check the eyelash extension results

Jacelyn Phang Fashionista Eyelash Extension 2016

When it is done, always check the mirror to see if you are happy with the results. There were some strands that were wrongly glued to my lower lash line, I told the therapist and within the next 5 mins, I have the perfect lashes I have been looking for! At Lushlashh, you can be sure you get to be happy with how the lashes look before you leave the place.

4.       Avoid oil-based make up remover for a lasting results

For a lasting result, avoid using oil based products or makeup remover around the eye area. They could weaken the adhesive glue and cause lashes to fall off.

Jacelyn Phang X After Eyelash Extension Lushlashh

My overall experience with Lushlashh was good. They were thoughtful to use an eye mask for the eye instead of using painful sticky eye tape for bottom lashes. I like that the eye mask could help to rejuvenate and brighten my dark eye circles while I had my extension done. Most importantly, I like the outcome of the extensions! The lashes were feathery and light, I didn’t feel that there was anything that was weighing down or making my eyes uncomfortable.

Thank you Lushlashh for keeping my lashes fluttery and ready for any work trips!

To book an appointment, contact +65 85685268.

Their operating hours are: Mon – Fri: 1030-1930 (last appointment), Sat 1100-1730 (last appointment).

The Local People Sg Art Market

Jacelyn Phang X Art Flea 2016

Visited The Local People Art Flea  to support local designers and entrepreneurs last Friday and was pleasantly surprised by the huge turnout for the event! Tanjong Pagar Railway track was massively packed from the entrance and I could barely moved from stalls to stalls inside.

The Local People Sg Art Flea

As someone who has always been interested in entrepreneurial activities, I  am really happy to see Singaporeans supporting local businesses. I considered myself extremely blessed to have been able to be on the prestigious NUS Overseas College (NOC) program where I had the opportunity to study in Fudan University and interned in a start up company of my choice in Shanghai for a year. The overseas and internship experience in a start-up was enriching and life-changing. It changed my perspective of life, and I am so glad I get to live my entrepreneurial dreams now that I am managing Le Queenz too! #supportlocal

Screen Shot 2016-03-28 at 10.48.54 PM

Anyway, the flea had many handmade items and if you would like unique accessories, quirky items and indie products, you will definitely love the flea! More importantly, you will also get to support local entrepreneurs with dreams together with the courage to pursue their dreams 🙂 To find out more about the local people’s upcoming flea, follow them on @thelocalpeoplesg on IG or follow their Facebook account here. (P.S. I do not get paid for saying these and this is not a sponsored advertisement)

Jacelyn Phang X Tanjong Pagar Railway

Outfit of the day is my first denim overalls from  PurPur that is so casual and chic. For the month of March, they are also having a 10% storewide discount + additional 10% off if you purchase a minimum of 2 pieces; so shop away!

ilight marina bay 2016

ilight festival 2016 X Jacely Phang Jing Qi

ilight marina bay is Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival; happening from 4 -27 March (admission is completely free), you can expect to see kaleidoscopic display of light installations and be serenaded by live music performances along marina bay.

ilight festival 2016

This is the forth edition of the light art festival, but my very first visit. I started my walk from Marina Bay Sands, and am pleasantly surprised by the number of people I see at the pop up stalls of Pasar Bella and how happening the area is! You can expect to see flea market vendors at the Marina Waterfront Bazaar, musical acts at the festival stage and Uncle Ringo’s carnival games! There’s basically something to see and play for people of all ages to enjoy.

Jacelyn Phang Angel i light

For a person who loves taking photo, there are a couple of places for you to grab images. and this is my favorite photo of the night!

Jacelyn Phang Haagen Dazs Ice Cream i light

I had a lot of fun looking at the different installations while keeping my tummy happy by getting food options from pop-up store of Haagen Dazs and food truck like Old Chang Kee. P.S. this is usually how I look because I love stuffing my face silly with food!

Jacelyn phang X i light festival

Lastly, I really like that the participating artists make use of recyclable materials and adopted energy-efficient lighting technology for some of their installations. As Leonardo DiCarprio said, “Let’s not take this planet for granted”, so let us collectively actively promote and remind each other to practice an environmentally responsible behavior for a sustainable future.

Do visit the festival if you are around the area!

Flirty Friday with Pur Pur

Jacelyn X Pur Pur Blue Tube White Skorts Jacelyn X Pur Pur Feb 2016 Jacelyn X Pur Pur

Dressed in a full outfit from Pur Pur, featuring a blue floral frills tube top and a D-ring white skorts. I like that the outfit is feminine and chic at the same time, it is perfect for everyday wear and even to casual dinner dates. The versatile top can be worn two ways, either as a tube top or an off-shoulder top depending on how you like it. Either way, it’s perfect for our tropical climate and you can show off your collarbone at the same time (think fun and sexy!). The skorts is both girly and convenient for you when running errands; there’s going to be zero worry about up-skirt situations.

Follow me on Instagram (@jacelynphang) to see more outfit inspirations. Meanwhile, have fun shopping; there’s no reason not to happy when you could be shopping 🙂

Review: Cinderella, A Fairly True Story

Jacelyn Phang Cinderella Review

If you didn’t catch Cinderella: A Fairly True Story, you really haven’t missed out.

Told from the point of a view of a reporter (the narrator of the story), Cinderella: A Fairly True Story features a great cast of talents singing, acting and dancing beautifully by the huge RWS Theatre stage. This production from Belgium directed by Karina Mertens features the classical Cinderella fairytale, with the focus on Cinderella’s relationship to her Mother (Deborah de Ridder).

I enjoyed myself immensely whenever the nanny of the prince (Wanda Joosten) and the Stepmother (Sara de Smedt) sang. Their energy was contagious and it was the most enjoyable highlights of the show for me.

You also get surprises in between the show like when Cinderella’s dress turned from rags to a beautiful blue gown and also when the pumpkin turned into a shiny golden carriage!

cinderella-prince-stage

I was expecting an enchanting and magical performance, but to be frank, I was fairly disappointed at many points of the production. Firstly, the prince (Caleb Vines) was less charming and tall as I would like him to be. I would think he’s more cute than suave. Which is a total letdown for a diehard disney fan when I saw him. He’s also a nanny-boy by the way.

I wished that Cinderella (Charlotte Campion) had sang more than she did in the production too. She has a crystal clear voice that lit up the whole theatre whenever she sang. But there were little of her dialogues and singing.

Featuring a mix of original music and popular radio hits (like “I Gotta Feeling”, “Everything I Do, I Do It For You”), I didn’t like the fusion of songs played.

Overall, they were a few light hearted moments, good comic actic and great singing, but I think the show is more catered for kids than for adults (i.e. more gimmicks that real solid content). Not complaining because it is decently worth its price; I got the cheapest ticket for only $58.50 (after a 25% discount) per pax and the Resort World Theatre is pretty comfortable (you can get relatively near the stage even with the cheapest ticket price category!).

P.S. The show is not worth recommending so my review came in so late.

Have a good week ahead friends!

With love, Jace
