Located conveniently at the gates of Somerset MRT station, Orchard Central provides easy access to fashion forward brands and popular dining eateries in their premise. The mall’s architectural designs forms a fresh and distinctive retail and dining experience for the urban shopper, featuring a huge collection of public art installations by internationally acclaimed artists.

Orchard Central is already famed for the restaurants choices under its roof from tasty confections at Lady M to adorable character themed eatery of Japanese cartoon character POMPOMPURIN Café.

Unknown to many shoppers, there are specialty stores within Orchard Central that bring in the best and most trendy items that are the latest rage overseas now.

From the trendiest Korean fashion accessory to western imported beauty products and savoring the widest selection of organic tea in a cafe, join me in uncovering these gems of Orchard Central.

Richard’s Atelier | Unit 05-48

Richard’s Atelier is not your usual optical store and you will realise this upon walking into their store. Walking into their store on the 5th floor of Orchard Central, you will be welcomed to a cozy and comfy environment with neat displays of spectacle frames atop wooden table top. These frames have been exclusively brought in from Korea which are very popular for the design and quality. One such brand is Alpen Eyewear, a premium Korean-made eyewear brand with a modern, European-style which celebrities like David Beckham loves.

For those looking at creating a unique and authentic style, you can also choose from a wide array of colours and frame designs to suit your use and lifestyle through their customization services.

Before you decide that Richard Atelier is not for you since you do not have a degree, you will be pleased to know that they exclusively bring in the hottest sunglass brand in Korea, Gentle Monster. Gentle Monster shot to fame when their sunglasses was worn by Jeon Ji Hyun (Cheon Song Yi) in My Love From The Star.

The main plus point of Korean sunglasses are that they are made by Asians for Asians. Think wider faces, high cheek bones and lower nose bridges. Comfort and fit ranks high on the charts when worn, not to mention how stylish they make you look. These are two of my favourite pairs of sunnies in the store.

TOKYU HANDS | Unit B1-07

TOKYU HANDS is a Japanese department store that has everything under its roof. From crafts, DIYs, tools and stationery to everyday merchandise, interior decoration items, cookware, cutlery, and even travel goods  – everything can be found there.

Tokyu Hands was originally a DIY and hobby shop, hence its green logo of two hands pointing in opposite directions. You can still join in various workshops and demonstrations organized by TOKYU HANDS occasionally. Follow them on their facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/TOKYUHANDSSingapore/) to be updated on these workshops.

The brightly lit shop with rows of shelves lined with colourful product, on the basement of Orchard Central, has its focus on beauty products and stationery which makes up more than half of the store.

Walking around the shop will have you stopping every few steps to oooh and aaah over products that are ingenious,  practical and thoughtfully constructed. Many of these products have been exclusively brought in from Japan which have proven to be popular in the Japanese market.

For me I am totally drawn to the huge range of stationery from beautifully Japanese printed design notebooks to the rainbow spread of pens and markers.

Stationery Galore At TOKYU HANDS

The beauty section of Tokyu Hands has wide array of skin care and make up products for beauty conscious ladies of all budgets and skin concerns.

The thoughtful folks at Tokyu Hands takes the extra effort to explain the product’s benefits and method of use in small write ups on the shelf so that you can choose the product that suits you the most.

You can also find Japanese beauty products that are not easily found in local drug stores.

Why is Tokyu Hands a gem in Orchard Central?

With their products exclusively brought in and distributed at Tokyu Hands, it is a great location to purchase gifts for friends and surprising with the uniqueness and thoughtfulness of the gift which they might even think you brought it back from your last trip to Japan.

TVOILA Cafe | Unit B1-15

A few steps away from Tokyu Hands is this spacious cafe that serves the largest range of organic tea in Singapore.

Tvoila Cafe’s soothing colours and calming environment is a great solace away from the hustle and bustle of Orchard Road. The perfect place to rest your tired legs, quench your thirst with their wide selection of cold brews or hot tea served in a pot.

A popular menu on the item, the Premium Organic Ice Tea, which I ordered one for myself has a wild berry base that was fragrant,  faintly tart and lightly sweetened. The ice tea was the best companion for balance of the sweet treats of cakes and waffles.

The waffles served atop a wooden serving board was surprisingly very flavourful and had a soft bouncy texture. Granted this waffles is not the best looking of the lot, but it is one of the better tasting ones and has a generous serving of fruits.

Why TVoila is a gem of Orchard Central?

With quality drinks and good tasting food at reasonable prices, this place is great for hanging out with friends over waffles and cakes and also a great place if you want to spend some time with yourself, catching up on some work or readings, this is the perfect hideout for you right in the heart of Orchard Road.

Shea | Unit B2-47

Shea carries a variety of natural and safe body care products under one roof and they began their journey accidentally from an overseas travel. The owners had stumbled upon a natural and chemical free soap that smelt nice and was good for sensitive skin.

Shea brings in many natural and safe products for body and skin care like Saadia Organics 100% Pure Argan Oil which is the only company in the world that produces Argan Oil by hand. The  traditional African black soap helps to fight acne and draw out impurities that are clogged in our pores. UK made cold process soaps contains essential oils that nourishes the skin, keeping it moisturised and supple, not to mention that these soaps are very attractive in designs and colours.

I had my hands at making my own bars of soap filled with ingredients that were good for my skin through the 1-hour beginner’s workshop. The soap base is made of shea butter and glycerine that rich, nourishing and safe. They cleanse but does not strip the skin of its natural protective barrier.

From this workshop, we are more aware that we actually do not want and need chemicals like SLS, EDTA, parabens and Pthalates in our soap as they dry and irritate the skin.

We were taught to make all-natural soaps from scratch. In this workshop, you’ll be able to choose from a variety of colours and moulds for the soaps you’ll be bringing home.
Choose your favourite scent from over 20 choices (baby powder, chocolate, lavender and more!), add in dried flowers for pretty effect and natural exfoliators to complete the soap.

It was an enriching experience to learn to make my own soaps and you can also sign up for this soap making workshop with a group of friends to learn a new skill and knowledge.
