Did you know

The Body Shop’s tea tree oil comes from tea tree plants grown organically in the foothills of Mount Kenya. When ready to be harvested, the best leaves are picked by hand, then steam-distilled to release the organic oil.

THE SUPPLIER

The Kenya Organic Oil Farmers’ Association (KOOFA) is made up of 380 small-scale famers, half of them women. Due to AIDS-related deaths, many of these women are supporting their family alone. Growing tea tree helps all its farmers to earn a steady income.

THE COMMUNITY

Rural poverty in Kenya has several causes: low rural productivity, land degradation, insecure land tenure, unemployment and low wages.

Unlike some other cash crops, tea tree plants have survived Kenya’s recent droughts, a lifeline for impoverished farmers.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT

None of the tea tree goes to waste. The main branches are used by the farmers for firewood or to support crops like beans. Smaller, thinner branches are processed along with the leaves. After distillation, the leftover plant fibres are used on the crops. Our supplier tells us that tea tree makes “a very good mulch”.

CLEAN WATER

Many people in remote, rural areas of Kenya don’t have reliable access to safe, clean drinking water. Our trade with KOOFA enables it to work on projects that improve the amount of clean water its local communities can drink.

SELF ESTEEM

KOOFA’s members are paid direct to their bank accounts, which the farmers can access through their mobile phone. This saves the farmers the long walk to get money. It has also given them a credit history and access to finance, which they can draw on to grow their business.

The Body Shop – Brazil Nut Oil range

The Amazon holds a precious secret deep in the Peruvian rainforest: The Brazil nut. One hardy little nut, the Brazil nut falls 50 metres from the highest tree tops to the ground where it is hand harvested by local nut collectors. We’ve blended our most nourishing ingredients with pure Community Fair Trade Brazil nut oil to create our new Brazil Nut collection.

Come 20 June 2013, it will be available in Singapore island-wide as part of The Body Shops Summer event. Brazil Nut is a super skin savior for dry skin as it is filled with a high concentration of antioxidants. The Body Shop’s Brazil nut oil is obtained through their Community Fair Trade programme which protects over 3,000 hectares of Peruvian rainforest by providing a livelihood for the nut collectors and nut crackers who are part of the Candela co-operative.

The products actually smell like cookies to me.

Here’s the texture of the scrub, as well as the body butter.
