How did we live without lasers? Introducing the AcuPulse™ CO2 Laser

In the marvellous world of aesthetics, lasers aid in facial rejuvenation and hair removal to the treatment of unsightly veins, stretch marks, skin resurfacing, scar removal, and so much more. The impact doesn’t just result in us looking better, it aids in our level of self esteem and restores our confidence too. For women, it helps us cope or fight the signs of aging. Especially in Singapore, when the sun does deal us a fair bit of damage. I wonder how we used to live without such technology.

Say goodbye to

  • Acne Scars
  • Scars
  • Wrinkles
  • Facial lines (esp the pesky nasolabial one)
  • Sun damage
  • Stretch marks
  • Uneven texture
  • Warts

Here’s what we found out about the technology and effects of AcuPulse at the launch hosted by Lumenis and Dr Wong Soon Tee.

AcuPulse boasts two key benefits:
•    1) Faster ablation rate means a lower risk of side effects
•    With the SuperPulse technology, AcuPulse has the ability to deliver high energy in short pulse durations. AcuPulse can achieve an ablation rate that is faster than almost any other CO2 laser in the market.

2) Optimised ablation/coagulation ratio means a pain-free treatment
•    AcuPulse uses minimal energy thanks to its optimised ablation/coagulation ratio. There is less risk of thermal damage and in turn this means a lower risk of side effects. Patients can also look forward to a comfortable treatment and recovery experience.
This versatile technology can be used to treat over 30 skin problems. For dermatologists, this is a wonderful investment. For patients, this is the solution they have been waiting for.

Here are some case studies- showing results of just 1 treatment done by Dr Wong. Starting from day 1 onwards to a few days later.

Downtime: With regards to redness of your skin, you can speak to Dr Wong to let him know your goals as well as threshold for pain and downtime :) On average, skin will be red for about 3 days (sometimes more sometimes less). Sunblock and aftercare is important, you would also need to stay out of the sun during the first few days when skin is more delicate.

Why Fractional CO2 is the leading laser procedure for skin tightening

Carbon dioxide skin resurfacing is not a new concept.  This laser has been around for two decades.  Although standard CO2 resurfacing was excellent for facial wrinkles, acne scarring, sun damage and solar elastosis, there was significant risk of infections, scarring and pigmentary alterations.  These side effects caused this laser to fall out of favor with laser surgeons and patients alike.

The concept of fractional technology was introduced in 2004.  Basically, this technology allows for a fraction of the skin to be treated while the intervening areas are not ablated.  These intact bridges of skin between the treated zones allows for rapid healing.

When this technology was coupled with the carbon dioxide laser, excitement in the aesthetic world catapulted.

There are several reasons for this:

1.  Less downtime.

Traditional CO2 laser carried lengthy down times of up to 6 weeks.  Some patients would have erythema (redness) present for up to 6 months.

With fractional CO2, the down time is anywhere from 3 days to 6 days depending on the energy level utilized.  This quick healing provides a much greater level of convenience for the typical patient.

2.  Less risk

With traditional laser the risk of infection, scarring such as hypertrophic scarring and pigmentary alterations (hypo or hyperpigmentation) were much more common even with the most skilled laser surgeons.

Because fractional CO2 leaves intervening zones of skin intact, the risks associated with this procedure are much less.

Chemical Peels – Enerpeel

Nowadays, one can get a derma peel at your aesthetician’s clinic without undergoing redness, itchiness, and other visible/tangible signs of peeling, there’s no “downtime” so to speak. And you can go back to work without experiencing discomfort, or worse, ridicule from work mates LOL. A perfect lunch time quick fix.

Dr Vanessa recently did an Enerpeel JR on my skin to help remove some scarring and acne that I have lately when I dropped by her clinic at Lucky Plaza.

After treatment, your skin will look younger, tighter and “fresher” than before. I noted that it results in smaller pores too (hurray).

I promise to post pictures of my before and after effects as soon as I can.

This is me removing my make up….

I actually liked their facial wash :) it smells fruity and was very gentle and not drying.

Ok so this is me…sans make up.

Lo & Behold. this is ….the current problem I have with my left cheek

:( Dr Vanessa recommended 4 peels – 1 peel per month for my skin. I’ll be posting a photo each week to track the progress :)

Meanwhile : My Doctor has a really cool hello kitty speaker set lol. My mom loves it too.

Here’s an unglam shot of my face being treated lol

Before, those peelers were physical and mechanical exfoliators, your doctor would apply them topically and you would be asked not to go out for some time. Dermatological advances are exponential just like other technologies, everything has improved by leaps and bounds. Let us be thankful that chemical peeling, or “chemoexfoliation” has been fine tuned already, given that these peelers have triple the advantages with reduced complications. It is now localized or more customized; there is an appropriate chemical agent for every skin worry, targeting areas depending on the problem.

Contrary to laser or micro-dermabrasion, chemical peeling does not depend on machines for its effectiveness given that its formulation acts out and solves the problem once they are dispensed by a dermatologist since it contains active ingredients that act in synergy with the body’s aqueous system. One can get chemoexfoliation not just in the face, but other parts as well, like the neck, the back areas, and even hands.

With Enerpeel, a chemoexfoliation can treat keratosis, chrono/photoaging and hyperpigmented lesions or what is popularly known as liver spots in just minutes.

Chemical skin peels are effective skin treatments used to improve and smooth out the surface of the facial skin. A chemical solution is applied to gently remove the top layer of skin from the patient’s treatment area – usually the face, neck or hands – taking blemishes and signs of ageing with it and promoting skin cell renewal. Peels are a popular option to remove fine lines and wrinkles and to heal skin that has been damaged in other ways.

Superficial chemical peels are a good option for many people as they have a gentler effect and do not give visible skin peeling, inflammation or significant redness compared to medium and deep chemical peels. They can be used on many skin types, with little or no “down time”.

The latest Enerpeel® technology, is a patented carrier solution which restrains the acids activity until it is absorbed to accelerate through the skin, enhancing its activity.

Enerpeel® means uniform and enhanced absorption of the active ingredients; with two to three fold improved skin penetration.

The result:

1) Less surface trauma.
2) Faster surface recovery with erythema reducing rapidly.
3) Enhanced remodeling/collagen stimulation.

FAQsWhat Happens During a Chemical Peel?
During a chemical peel, the patient’s treatment area will be cleansed thoroughly, and the chemical peel is applied to the skin using a gentle brush. After treatment, a soothing cream is applied, and sun protection is reinforced.

Does it hurt?
Some patients will experience a mild tingling sensation for five to ten minutes, which can be followed by a stinging sensation. These are usually temporary.

Who May Benefit from a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels can be used to treat a wide range of problems, and are not just an anti-ageing solution. Chemical peels are commonly used to reduce and treat:

Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Age Spots, Freckles and Dark Spots
Dehydrated, Dull Skin
Mild Scars
Rough Skin Texture

How Many Peels Do I Need?
Whilst you may see some minor benefits after a single peel, doctors recommend a course of about 4 peels, each 1 week apart as the full benefits of the peel builds up over a course of treatments.

Is it safe?
Yes, chemical peels are generally very safe. Some people – those who take birth control pills or fall pregnant after the treatment – may be at risk of experiencing a colour change in their skin after the procedure, but this should be fully explored and discussed at consultation.

Treatment starts from $180 per session at various aesthetics clinics.

There are many types of Enerpeels of which I’ve tried JR and MA.

Enerpeel® for the Eyes and LipsEnerpeel® EL is a gel-based solution that is especially designed for the sensitive eye and lip areas. At FreshSkin we  increase the concentration by layering the product/ This allows us to achieve similar result as we would with a high strength acid, but without the irritation and redness.

Enerpeel® by MAEnerpeel® MA is a great “all purpose” peel.   It is a non-aggressive, yet high performing treatment that can be used in all seasons and with any skin type and is especially effective on Rosacea prone skin.

Enerpeel® by SASalicylic Acid 30%

This skin peel is specifically designed for acne sufferers. Its oil production reducing effect, along with two other active ingredients – triethyl citrate and ethyl linoleate – have been shown to reduce the four main visible signs of acne. This skin peel is particularly effective during the inflammatory phase of acne that is characterised by papules and pustules.

Enerpeel®PAEnerpeel® PA contain several solutions that are effective at decreasing fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of premature skin aging as well as seborrhea, mild hyperpigmentation and in cases of stubborn acne.

Enerpeel®JREnerpeel® JR contains salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol, (Jessner’s formula) but utilizing Glytone’s ENERPEEL technology allowing for a superficial to medium exfoliation and very little downtime. Enerpeel® JR is very helpful at improving hyperpigmentation and melasma, and leaves the skin looking  younger,  tighter and “fresher” than before.

There’s also Enerpeel for eyelids

Here’s a video that illustrates how it works

ZO Skin Health by Dr Zein Obagi

I attended a talk today by SkinCare Guru Dr Zein Obagi who runs a beverly hills based clinic. He’s the creator of ZO Skin -distributed by Zoe Nissi a Singaporean based company who is the sole distributor of Obagi Medical Products and ZO Skin Health Products in four countries namely Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

ZO can be bought at Prive Clinic, Cosmetic Surgery Clinic at Paragon, FEM clinic at Mt Elizabeth Hospital amongst others.

I’m currently testing out their Oclipse sunscreen primer -$85 for 30ml (before gst) as well as Daily Power Defense $160 for 50ml (before gst). I thought it was extremely smart however that he had incorporated melanin (derived freely from plants etc) into a sunscreen. As we all know melanin is nature’s gift to people in tropical latitudes and desert regions, where ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the most intense. Melanin acts as a protective shield against sunburn, sun damage, skin cancer and even sun-related aging such as wrinkles. I wonder why no one, till Dr Obagi thought about incorporating Melanin into skincare products.

Here’s an old interview of his documenting his philosphy – it also talks about why sometimes big businesses and passions don’t go together. and why he is no longer part of the very first company he founded which was Obagi Medical Products.

Dr. Obagi’s quest for healthy skin really began at the age of fifteen, when his 16-year old sister was badly burned with scalding water and suffered months of recovery in the hospital. “I noticed the doctors were not able to do very much for her. They were resigned to just letting the body heal itself, and then maybe they would be able to do some grafts,” says Dr. Obagi.  “It seemed like they really had nothing to use in helping her skin heal. That gave me a lot to think about.”

Here’s an interview with great tips and facts on skin featuring Dr Obagi

Retinol targets the signs of aging by stimulating cellular renewal, boosting collagen production and improving skin elasticity. The result? A visible reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and increase in dermal density and firmness. Typically, for a skin-saver to be topically effective, it should reach a concentration of at least 0.7 percent. While most products available over the counter contain 0.4 percent, Ossential Radical Night Repair Plus contains a 1.0 percent concentration of retinol — 2 and a half times the industry average.

Salicylic Acid

An absolute must for those with acne-prone skin, using a topical salicylic acid treatment not only sweeps away excess oil, but also removes dead skin cells on the surface for instantly clearer skin. ZO Skin Health Offects TE-Pads made with 2 percent Salicylic Acid — the highest over-the-counter concentration. Used daily, the facial pads exfoliate skin and control breakouts by reducing oiliness.

Lactic Acid

This multi-tasking skin-saver is proven to help exfoliate rough patches and resurface the skin for a firmer, smoother looking finish. Known for its intense hydrating properties and ability to stimulate collagen production, lactic acid leaves skin softer and more youthful looking. ZO Skin Health Oraser Body Emulsion can soften and moisturize dry skin, and also reduces the appearance of dark spots.
