The Asiarooms Pop Up Hotel

I was lucky enough to be 1 out of the 3 people who got a chance to stay at the Asiarooms Pop Up Hotel. The other 2 were bloggers Dawn, and Darren.

So I invited my bestie along, and we gamely took to the Asiarooms Pop Up Hotel just last weekend at Cineleisure. I have to admit we’re are the most shy people around and so we were really making ourselves at home here :)

Clowning around – upon check in.

A little unglam here- but all for good fun.

Our every move is monitored…..LOL

But oh don’t worry – we were allowed to draw the curtains whenever we wanted.

The bed was really comfy . And we had fresh bedsheets too. hehehe. I slept short but well that night.

I love the Asiarooms Teddy – but sadly we couldn’t keep him :( guess I got to go build myself one now. At the Build A Bear workshop? lol.

Know what impressed me?

I was most thrilled to see so much customization going into my little stay. The Asiarooms team are so detailed :) and thoughtful. They packed juices and chocolate bars for us, arranged for supper, dvds, and more. I felt almost like a princess or perhaps a bride on her wedding day – where everyone panders to her requests hahahah.

Here we have our very own butler – who is quite the cutie with a bowtie :)

he’s actually our personnel and butler all rolled in one – my bestie and I totally approve. hahahahhaha!!!

He delivered our supper :) – and stayed up the entire night to ensure our safety. Needless to say we were super touched! She bought him coffee the next morning.

We had Dvds to occupy ourselves with. Guess what we watched? We had decided we watched to watch the rum diaries because of Johnny Depp, but we were a tad tired and didn’t want to go thru the intellectual dialogue…..so we ….decided ..to watch….Meet The Fockers hahahah.

Oh and we were also given in-room mani + pedi + a massage by the Therapists from Siglap’s Hands + Feet studio. Fast Forward to today (Monday) I have ruin my lovely nails already *cries*.

Onto our male masseur – we realized he’s super skilled! A pretty humourous dude as well :) Well usually one wouldn’t be too comfortable with a male masseur but he’s really professional and knows the exact places to knead your muscles.

Mandy then worked her magic on my hands and feet : ) amazing speed there. I went from Maroon nails.

Ok if you are wondering why I’m dressed like that with super elaborate hair. That’s because I had attending the Singapore Blog Awards which happens to be themed the 60s. :) This was styled by Vernice from Clover Salon at Far East Plaza on Scotts Road.

Here’s a peek of the process – I love my hair color too! and the streaks (from my dipdye days)

Amazing yea? Made me look like I was 40 years old however (I guess it is the Tweed jacket hahaha) .

Here’s a more relaxed look the next morning just before check out – and before drawing the curtains fully.

If you think that was all – I was given a voucher for One Night Stay with breakfast for 2 persons at Ramada Singapore at ZhongShan Park. Located on 16 Ah Hood Road, Singapore 329982. (Hilarious road name btw).

Hello to my next Staycation  –  I could really get used to this. <3

Oh Diamonds…..

Diamonds were first mined in India more than 4,000 years ago.
The ancient Greeks and Romans believed they were tears of the gods and splinters from falling stars. The Hindus believed that diamonds were formed by lightning striking rock and attributed such power to these precious stones that they placed them in the eyes of their statues. Kings and queens throughout history have adorned themselves with diamonds and fought bitter battles to gain possession of these unique jewels. India is still where most of the world’s diamond cutters reside.

To the ancients, diamonds were magical, mystical talismans.
It was believed they could do everything from bringing luck, wealth and success to their wearers to bestowing power, fearlessness, invincibility and even heightened sexual prowess. Roman soldiers wore diamonds in battle to protect them and give them courage. In the Middle Ages, diamonds were used to ward off the effects of poison and illness. The Jewish High Priests believed the stone could determine innocence or guilt.

The placement of the ring was significant, as Romans believed that a vein in the third finger of one’s left hand (vena amorous) ran directly to the heart. For Romans, betrothal rings were given as a sign of affection or friendship, and did not always represent the rite of marriage.

Not all diamonds were made equal.
This helps explain why 80% of mined diamonds (equal to about 135,000,000 carats (27,000 kg) annually), unsuitable for use as gemstones, are destined for industrial use.

Of all those made into gemstones – not all are equal either. Less than a tenth of 1% of the world’s diamonds can become Hearts On Fire. Expertly selected from only the rarest rough diamonds, chosen for exquisite optical purity. Each crystal unique, like a snowflake, Is sculpted into a work of art.
Have you ever wondered how your gemstones were cut and polish from the rough?
Here’s how

These days new techniques such as virtual 3D modelling to determine the best yield from rough as well as highly accurate laser sawing are applied for precision in cutting.

Let’s talk about cuts

The Hearts On Fire Diamond

Having worked at Cartier and Chopard both of which produces fine watches and jewelry, I was really intrigued to find out more about the technical background of diamonds. I’ve previous sat through gemstone classes back at Chopard by Mr. Mathias Hugg which fueled up my passion for gemstones.

Here’s the story of Hearts On Fire

On a planet of 7 billion people, only 400 can craft a Hearts On Fire diamond.
Each is a passionate artist. A skilled expert at releasing the maximum light and life from each diamond. Cut to perfection.

Hearts On Fire diamonds are cut to the most exacting standards in the industry, few artisans in the world can cut a diamond to these precise proportions.  Brian McHardy is one of them.  I had the opportunity to speak to Brian recently. The master cutter at Hearts on Fire.

Born in South Africa, Brian’s craft has been passed down through three generations of
McHardys.

His artisanal lineage began when his great grandfather discovered the famous 3, 106-carat Cullinan diamond, the largest diamond crystal, in South Africa in 1905. In recognition of his family’s contribution to the diamond industry, The McHardy House at the Premier Mine in South Africa is now a museum open to the public.

Amazing isn’t it?

Brian has served as the Master Diamond Cutter at Hearts On Fire since 1999, and has
traveled worldwide to represent Hearts On Fire and demonstrate the art and
science of cutting the world’s most perfectly cut diamond. The love for diamonds is very apparent in this man, whom for someone who sees diamonds on a daily basis doesn’t wear a one. Brian had shown us a few unpolished diamonds, one of which was a 12 carat stone – by which once it has gone through the cut and polish will come out as a nearly 4 carat Hearts on Fire (Hof) diamond. (Wonder where did the other 8 carats go to).

Here are the unpolished diamonds :) quite surreal.

And a demonstration of how diamonds are polished . Brian lets us in that at the Hearts On Fire facility however, diamonds were polished in a vibration free environment.

A bronze plate is used to cut diamonds and a cast iron wheel used to polish. Did you know, diamond polish is made from old fashion olive oil mixed with diamond powder.

(Pictured here: A diamond that is on its way to perfection – in the hands of Brian.) I’m surprised how much it sparkles given that it is only half polished.

I asked Brian in one of our conversations how fancy colored diamonds occurred. Such as the hope diamond. Because of its extremely rigid lattice, it can be contaminated by very few types of impurities, such as boron and nitrogen. Combined with wide transparency, this results in the clear, colorless appearance of most natural diamonds. Small amounts of defects or impurities (about one per million of lattice atoms) color diamond blue (boron), yellow (nitrogen), brown (lattice defects), green (radiation exposure), purple, pink, orange or red. Now depending on how you view things, there is beauty in these imperfections.

I do agree with Brian that diamonds today have been reduced to just a bunch of alphabets and codes, when before it was a rock of mystery , revered for its beauty and timelessness. He shares how Hearts On Fire strives to up the ante, to produce a diamond so magnificent that today is labeled “The World’s Most Perfectly Cut Diamond”. This is really informative and will give you insights on how the processes it takes from the rough to that rock on your hand.

What the ILLA collection means to me.

To me, the ILLA collection signifies a pair of Star Crossed Lovers. Astroligical in origin, the phrase stems from the belief that the positions of the stars ruled over people’s fates, and is best known from the play Romen & Juliet by William Shakespeare.

It also refers to destiny and the inevitability of the two characters’ paths crossing each other. Like the story of Heloise and Abelard, one of history’s most passionate and romantic love stories till date. Their love story was so moving that in 1817, Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, ordered the remains of the lovers to be entombed together in the famous cemetery centuries after their deaths in the 1100s.

The fated love story of Heloise and Abelard goes like this. In the 12th century, a niece of the canon of Notre Dame named Heloise, who was gifted in the study of Latin, Greek and Hebrew, wanted to be able to study as young men were allowed to. Because of her precociousness, intelligence, and her uncle’s ability to pull strings, she was deemed to be the sole female student of the greatest living theologian and intellectual of the time, Peter Abelard.

Abelard, 20 years her senior, soon fell in love with his student and the feeling was reciprocated. After entering into an illicit relationship, they were soon found out. They escaped to Brittany where Heloise, pregnant, gave birth to a son. Her uncle, the canon, urged them to return to Paris, where they were secretly married.

When the canon disclosed their marriage, Heloise, at Abelard’s suggestion, fled to a convent at Argenteuil. Her uncle, believing she was through with Abelard, had him castrated. Heloise, on Abelard’s urging, then became a nun. She was forced to give up her child.

After the disastrous end to their affair and marriage, Abelard also turned to the church. He became a monk at the abbey of St. Denis where he continued his teachings and writings.

Their passion is known through love letters they exchanged over a 20-year period after their separation, during which time Heloise became an abyss and Abelard rose to become the most prominent theologian of his time. The book, Stealing Heaven: The Love Story of Heloise and Abelard by Marion Meade, tells the tale of their tragic love affair.

Some accounts say the star-crossed lovers met once more at a chance meeting in Paris, and others say they never met again. But through their famous letters, the story of their love has endured. It seems only fitting that they should now be buried side by side in Pere Lachaise, after long years of separation.

Today, lovers from all over the world visit the tomb where the remains of Heloise and Abelard rest eternally together; and the letters of Heloise & Abelard are among the best known records of early romantic love.

Here’s one of my favourite love poems – by Pablo Neruda.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.

Write, for example,’The night is shattered
and the blue stars shiver in the distance.’

The night wind revolves in the sky and sings.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

Through nights like this one I held her in my arms
I kissed her again and again under the endless sky.

She loved me sometimes, and I loved her too.
How could one not have loved her great still eyes.

Tonight I can write the saddest lines.
To think that I do not have her. To feel that I have lost her.

To hear the immense night, still more immense without her.
And the verse falls to the soul like dew to the pasture.

What does it matter that my love could not keep her.
The night is shattered and she is not with me.

This is all. In the distance someone is singing. In the distance.
My soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

My sight searches for her as though to go to her.
My heart looks for her, and she is not with me.

The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time, are no longer the same.

I no longer love her, that’s certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing.

Another’s. She will be another’s. Like my kisses before.
Her voice. Her bright body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, that’s certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.

Because through nights like this one I held her in my arms
my soul is not satisfied that it has lost her.

Though this be the last pain that she makes me suffer
and these the last verses that I write for her.

– Pablo Neruda

Hearts On Fire FAQ

Less than a Fraction of One Percent of all the Diamonds in the World will qualify to be Hearts On Fire diamonds

All of our diamonds are selected from knot free crystals which perform at the highest level of intensity allowing you to express yourself with the same.

Craftsmen who meet our standards are as rare as the diamonds themselves. Less than 400 people in the world are qualified to create a Hearts On Fire diamond.

While most manufacturers use a 10 times magnification process HOF crafts their diamonds at 100 times magnification using NASA based technology.

Of the 4 C’s cut is the only one under man’s control. It’s also the most important in revealing a diamonds beauty.

Hearts On Fire has two unique cuts; the round brilliant HOF diamond and the square Dream diamond. When a diamond is perfectly cut a phenomenon of light creates a brilliant 8 pointed Fireburst across the crown and a ring of perfectly matched hearts seen from the bottom. Hence our rather unique name.

Octahedrons are the diamonds of choice for Hearts On Fire diamonds. Octahedrons – because they are formed at higher pressure, higher temperature, and slower growing crystals – have the ability to squeeze out all of those imperfections while they are being formed in nature.

The Diamond Cutting Process
After the selection of the rough is the first step in the diamond cutting process. This is the design center, this is ground zero – nobody else does this. This department is called VSP – Value Scan Program. What they do is they scan an image into a computer, which brings up a three dimensional model onto the screen that plots the inclusions and tells us exactly what the diamond is going to look like when it is finished. We are looking for the highest value as opposed to the biggest diamond possible. It gives us the ability to maximize the full potential of every single diamond.

100 Power Magnification
Hearts On Fire diamonds are polished at 100 power magnification, something they do that nobody else does.

I leave you with the full spectrum of the Illa Collection
