OLAY AQUACTION

Olay, the world’s leading facial care brand, has launched AquAction – a new hydration range featuring breakthrough HydraLock technology to deliver a new standard in hydration care. While we’re all being distracted by the two hunks pictured above – let’s try to come back to the main point lol.

See our skin constantly loses moisture to its surroundings – much like a leaky bucket – even if moisture is constantly being replenished. In fact, without doing much at all, we can lose about two glasses of water a day by breathing and through evaporation from our skin – imagine how much more moisture an active woman can lose! (Also what happens if you drink less than 8 glasses? lol). Now I see why I have periods of severe dry skin. *grimaces*

While genetics is certainly a key factor in what type of skin you have, (and you know some of us did not score in the birth lottery….which all the VS models did)

Skin fatigue

P&G scientists have now discovered a second key cause of moisture loss – skin fatigue. Skin fatigue is the loss of skin energy, which leads to many unwanted changes in one’s skin, including skin losing its ability to hold on to moisture, causing the skin’s “leaky bucket” to become even more leaky.

Most hydration-focused technologies tend to focus on fixing the first issue. However, to keep skin hydrated and bouncy in the long-term, skincare products need to address not one but both causes of skin moisture loss.

For the longest time now most products tout Hylauronic acid as their miracle ingredient. However P&G has discovered an ingredient capable of outperforming hyaluronic acid, an ingredient known to fill and seal skin’s leaky bucket and seen as the current gold standard in hydration care.

Presenting WSK – the ingredient was extracted from the white jelly leaf (the white fungus we eat every so often in our cheng tings and our chinese desserts), yes this simple ingredient is renowned throughout ancient Chinese history and modern times for its beauty-enhancing properties. (Even taiwanese beauty Guru Niu Er recommends it!)

Inspired by the legendary beauty of Yang Guifei, an 8th century Chinese royal consort whose beauty was so great that it supposedly drove the emperor to distraction, Olay scientists discovered WSK by studying the white jelly leaf, which was said to feature prominently in her skincare regimen.

In their examination, scientists managed to isolate the fascinating WSK compound – which was found to outperform hyaluronic acid dramatically, weight-for-weight, when its ability to hold water was put to the test versus hyaluronic acid. This is a significant finding, because until now it was thought that hyaluronic acid was the gold standard for hydrating ingredients.

Check this out:

Hylauronic acid in the cup on the left went all the way thru the sieve. And WSK retaining all the moisture it held – on the right side. Amazing no?

Most products are contented to stop here but Olay’s research has found that just filling the skin’s leaky bucket isn’t sufficient – the issue of skin fatigue needs to be addressed. Now the phenomenon of skin fatigue – decreasing energy – dictates that if this isn’t addressed, skin will not only get drier, but will become less responsive to hydrating ingredients. It is thus extremely important to re-energize skin – which is where another active ingredient, Niacinamide comes in.

Niacinamide brings the skin energy level of aged cells back to more youthful levels, so that over time, it gives skin the energy to renew itself, and make components that enable skin to hold onto its own moisture more effectively.

Proven to deliver “Pump Pump Bouncy Skin”

New Olay AquAction brings the two powerhouse ingredients of WSK and Niacinamide together in its new breakthrough HydraLock technology. Designed to effectively fight not just one, but both causes of skin dryness, new Olay AquAction delivers a new standard of hydration that is known fondly as “Pump Pump Bouncy Skin’’.

According to David Khoo, Olay’s Senior Scientist, “Pump Pump Bouncy Skin’’ is achieved when skin cells are well-hydrated and attain a full, rounded shape, giving skin a firm and elastic touch.”

“Olay AquAction represents a new standard in hydration actives – it has been designed to deliver 12-hour non-stop hydration so skin is kept hydrated for longer. When we conducted a consumer study with the product, 92% of users agreed it leaves skin feeling hydrated while 7 out of 10 users believe that the product leaves skin supple and elastic,” said Mr Khoo.

Angelababy swears by this! and I would glady testify that the sleeping mask really does its work for me. Last week just before I had my period, I was working many late nights trying to set up my a new service for my company and being one that’s really sensitive to stress and late nights. It definitely took a toil on my complexion…. so I had Olay Sleeping Mask to the rescue and just using it for 2 nights helped me alot. My skin was less tight and uncomfortable , and the light plessant smell helped me to sleep better too Lol.

The range is retailing in most places by now and is priced reasonably!

THE SUPPLIER

The Kenya Organic Oil Farmers’ Association (KOOFA) is made up of 380 small-scale famers, half of them women. Due to AIDS-related deaths, many of these women are supporting their family alone. Growing tea tree helps all its farmers to earn a steady income.

THE COMMUNITY

Rural poverty in Kenya has several causes: low rural productivity, land degradation, insecure land tenure, unemployment and low wages.

Unlike some other cash crops, tea tree plants have survived Kenya’s recent droughts, a lifeline for impoverished farmers.

WASTE NOT WANT NOT

None of the tea tree goes to waste. The main branches are used by the farmers for firewood or to support crops like beans. Smaller, thinner branches are processed along with the leaves. After distillation, the leftover plant fibres are used on the crops. Our supplier tells us that tea tree makes “a very good mulch”.

CLEAN WATER

Many people in remote, rural areas of Kenya don’t have reliable access to safe, clean drinking water. Our trade with KOOFA enables it to work on projects that improve the amount of clean water its local communities can drink.

SELF ESTEEM

KOOFA’s members are paid direct to their bank accounts, which the farmers can access through their mobile phone. This saves the farmers the long walk to get money. It has also given them a credit history and access to finance, which they can draw on to grow their business.

Do check out the rest of theTea Tree range which includes the Tea Tree Face Mask ($30.90), Tea Tree Blemish Gel ($18.90), Tea Tree Skin Clearing Lotion ($29.90), Tea Tree Skin Clearing Toner ($22.90), Tea Tree Pore Minimiser ($32.90), Tea Tree Concealer ($19.90), Tea Tree Blemish Fade Night Lotion ($29.90), Tea Tree Oil ($18.90).

here’s a peek at my underarm IPL process lol . The protective eye wear that STRIP provides is quite stylish actually….hahahah

And they’re amongst the best I’ve been given. Even the protective googles that were given to me by one of the well known dermatologist in Paragon didn’t quite cut it and didn’t do its job in shielding the strong lights from the IPL from my eye. I think quality protective eyewear is really important especially when we’re faced with harsh lights in such an intensity. So Thank You STRIP for taking the lead here. It made me feel really relaxed about the whole session :)

NEW OIL OF MOROCCO ARGAN OIL COLLECTION

Morocco – what better place to look for beauty secrets than a land filled with beauty and exotic vistas. Well known for centuries in its homeland as a beauty staple for healthy looking hair, ARGAN OIL is the foundation for MARC ANTHONY’s latest haircare range. It is deemed as one of the greatest ancestral beauty secrets from Morocco and has garnered a huge following of celebrities including Selena Gomez, Madonna and Josie
Maran, all whom are amazed by the multiple benefits and the results seen after using this super-oil.

Did you know?
Argan Oil strengthens, moisturizes, gives shine and relieves hair from damages.

Weak, dull, dry hair is often the byproduct of a damaged cuticle resulting from regular styling, processing and environmental stress over time. To help combat damaged cuticles, the Oil of Morocco Collection has combined Argan Oil with another super-ingredient, KERATIN, which helps to fortify, protect and correct hair cuticles. This divine combination ensures that your hair transform into a lush, rich shine that reflects a healthy scalp. Suitable for all hair types.

The Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Collection is entirely sulfate free (Hurray!), thus, every single step helps to cleanse, strengthen and retain your hair’s natural oils. Suited for sensitive scalp, the sulfate free formula is mild and will help liberate the scalp from any irritation. The result is healthy hair that is strong and frizz-free.

Here’s a peek into the ingredients: Featuring grape seed oi, and sunflower seed oil in additional to of course Argan Oil. The shampoo is lightly scented – I never was a fan of heavy or overpowering smells so this is perfect.

This is the conditioner, the shampoo is a light milky emulsion :)

The argan oil treatment is a light orange colored oil  – use 2 to 3 pumps each time.

Availability
The Marc Anthony Oil of Morocco Collection is available at selected Watson’s stores, including Ngee Ann City, Bugis Junction, ION Orchard, Marina Square and Vivo City.

The Body Shop – Brazil Nut Oil range

The Amazon holds a precious secret deep in the Peruvian rainforest: The Brazil nut. One hardy little nut, the Brazil nut falls 50 metres from the highest tree tops to the ground where it is hand harvested by local nut collectors. We’ve blended our most nourishing ingredients with pure Community Fair Trade Brazil nut oil to create our new Brazil Nut collection.

Come 20 June 2013, it will be available in Singapore island-wide as part of The Body Shops Summer event. Brazil Nut is a super skin savior for dry skin as it is filled with a high concentration of antioxidants. The Body Shop’s Brazil nut oil is obtained through their Community Fair Trade programme which protects over 3,000 hectares of Peruvian rainforest by providing a livelihood for the nut collectors and nut crackers who are part of the Candela co-operative.

The products actually smell like cookies to me.

Here’s the texture of the scrub, as well as the body butter.

Physiogel – Free Samples

I was pleasantly surprised one day to come home to a bag full of Physiogel products without a hint of who sent it. Afterwhich I discovered it was sent to us by Physiogel from our dear editor Bianca. :)

Being an individual who grew up with eczema… and living in hot and humid Singapore, can’t tell you how delighted I am whenever I receive something that’s said to be suited for sensitive skin or people with eczema problems.

While the brand’s packaging is fuss free and straight to the point. The product within however I can attest for.

Physiogel creams/lotions are able to help relieve eczema in the following ways:

Improve Skin Moisture Level
Reduce Itch
Reduces Inflammation
Repairs the skin barrier function (to prevent loss of moisture and bacteria attacks)
Repair dehydrated skin naturally and locks in moisture for up to 3 days

On the 1st day of usage, I woke up to supple skin, which seem to retain moisture even during my bath. The cream smells quite strongly of coconut oil and so I set about to study its ingredients and true enough Physiogel contains coconut.

Example of the ingredients include: Water, Carprylic/Capric Trigliceride, Glycerine, Pentylene Glycol, Cocos Nucifera(Coconut Oil), Palm Glycerides, Butyrospermum Parkil, Olea Europaea, Hyrdrogenated Lecithin, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Capryly Glycol, Xanthin Gum, Squalene, Carbomer, Sodium Carbomer, Ceramide 3

Great for those who rashes, dry skin, eczema and more.

Bionike – an allergen free philosophy

Italian skincare brand BIONIKE is finally available in Singapore. A brand that roots in greek ethimology. Bio = Life , Nike = Victory , of which Nike is pronounced a “Ni Kay”.

BIONIKE actually adopts an allergen free philosophy where all its products are preservative free, fragrance free, Gluten-free and Nickel Tested.

I was given the DEFENCE ELIXAGE range to try out in full retail sizes although the brand carries a super extensive subset of products from haircare, nail polishes, to even acne skin products, to targeted ranges like Triderm which aids in pediatric treatment and those with dermatitis, and Proxera which helps to meet the needs of those with skin xerosis and more.

here’s me and Jing Yu posing with the models of Bionike. Jing Yu writes for L’Officiel magazine.

Did you know:
Within Italy, Bionike ranks as of 1Q 2013, 2nd place in market share. As per 2012 details as well they are first place in make up and cleansers and 2nd in sun products (cool huh?). It also helps with the brand is founded by a pharmacist named Loris Agostinini back in the 60s giving them a huge headstart in catering products to those with sensitive skin.
I was given the Satin, Contour as well as Elixir from the DEFENCE ELIXAGE Range . Here are the ingredients used in each product

I was told the average canadian woman uses 12 products in a day which corresponds to 168 different ingredients being applied/ and at times absorbed into your skin on a daily basis. This figure is just 6 products and 85 ingredients for the average men. So girls take heed :)

Here’s when you start to feel glad brands like BIONIKE are around to help.

The DEFENCE ELIXAGE range contains the exclusive Subli-F.A.C.E ingredient complex, that combines biotechnologically developed polysaccharides with vitamin factors and potent plant antioxidant agents to provide a triple anti-ageing effect: promote skin’s natural regeneration mechanism, enhance repair processes and counter damage from free radicals. Skin is left toned, smoother, radiantly alive and appears as regenerated: wrinkles are softened and facial features are more defined.

Subli-F.A.C.E.: a complex of active ingredients that work synergistically to effectively counter the signs of skin ageing and improve the appearance and compactness of skin. The complex includes:
• Polysaccharides of biotechnological origin: work on keratinocytes, stimulating the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and laminin-5.

• F.A.C.E. VITAMINS (linoleic acid, retinyl palmitate, ascorbyl palmitate, tocopheryl acetate) carried in phospholipids for enhanced bioavailability, promote collagen synthesis and perform an antioxidant and regenerating action.

• Lycopene: phyto-ingredient with a strong anti-oxidant action and that strengthens skin by promoting the synthesis of collagen
Lipoaminoacid: counteracts ageing keeping the physiological communication system between epidermal cells active and efficient.

Trimethylglycine + Hyaluronic acid: moisturising components, the former works rapidly to collect water in the superficial layers of the epidermis, the latter works as back-up hydration by creating moisture reserves.

All in all after a weeks usage, my skin always felt supple and hydrated. I also liked applying the lip and eye contour defence elixage. Nothing like a dual functioning cream for convenience :) Something I think my mom will enjoy using too.

Xiao Yuan Holding Pte Ltd, the company that has brought Bionike to Singapore. the same company happens to run a largely successful SPA www.thespa-lon.com/

A specialist in the aesthetics field for more than 20 years. Their brand portfolio includes Talika, Phytomer, Phytoceane, Vie Collection, Fleur, Bionike and Istrilene.
