Angular Cheilitis

This is a great article on the treatment of Angular Cheilitis

http://getridofangularcheilitis.com/

It is inflammation of one, or more commonly both, of the corners of the mouth. It is a type of cheilitis (inflammation of the lips). This condition typically presents with erythema, painful cracking, scaling, bleeding, and ulceration at the corners of the mouth.1 Angular cheilitis can occur spontaneously but more often develops in those who wear oral dentures and appliances, those who are required to wear masks as part of their occupation, and in some small children—particularly those who slobber and use pacifiers.2Most patients experience dry lips and discomfort. Patients often describe a burning sensation, which is often reproducible when pressure is applied to lesions. The etiology of angular cheilitis is controversial.3 The most common etiology is infectious and includes such organisms as Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and β-hemolytic streptococci.

Sadly some 2-3 months ago I had a case of Angular Cheilitis, seeked help at the GP across the street whereby he prescribed a tube of fusidic acid but it came to nought. After a week of using it with no effect, I bought a tube of Hydrocortisol – this time it stung my lip and didn’t alleviate any of the horror I was going thru. I applied vasaline daily but it didn’t help that much.

Then recently I realized after Dr Phua did an enerpeel on me and slathered on some antibacterial cream on me that the Angular Cheilitis subsided within a day . I was overjoyed, but my lips were still dry after a week with Angular Cheilitis threatening to resurface. I updated Dr Phua today during my second peel and she prescribed Altargo 1% cream which I have to apply twice daily for 5 days. Finger crossed that this will work . :)

The next time you have a crack on your lip, please take heed! Get an antibacterial mouthwash and gargle away. Lest you get a case of Angular Cheilitis-  which I read can commonly become chronic should you not manage it well.

Chemical Peels – Enerpeel

Nowadays, one can get a derma peel at your aesthetician’s clinic without undergoing redness, itchiness, and other visible/tangible signs of peeling, there’s no “downtime” so to speak. And you can go back to work without experiencing discomfort, or worse, ridicule from work mates LOL. A perfect lunch time quick fix.

Dr Vanessa recently did an Enerpeel JR on my skin to help remove some scarring and acne that I have lately when I dropped by her clinic at Lucky Plaza.

After treatment, your skin will look younger, tighter and “fresher” than before. I noted that it results in smaller pores too (hurray).

I promise to post pictures of my before and after effects as soon as I can.

This is me removing my make up….

I actually liked their facial wash :) it smells fruity and was very gentle and not drying.

Ok so this is me…sans make up.

Lo & Behold. this is ….the current problem I have with my left cheek

:( Dr Vanessa recommended 4 peels – 1 peel per month for my skin. I’ll be posting a photo each week to track the progress :)

Meanwhile : My Doctor has a really cool hello kitty speaker set lol. My mom loves it too.

Here’s an unglam shot of my face being treated lol

Before, those peelers were physical and mechanical exfoliators, your doctor would apply them topically and you would be asked not to go out for some time. Dermatological advances are exponential just like other technologies, everything has improved by leaps and bounds. Let us be thankful that chemical peeling, or “chemoexfoliation” has been fine tuned already, given that these peelers have triple the advantages with reduced complications. It is now localized or more customized; there is an appropriate chemical agent for every skin worry, targeting areas depending on the problem.

Contrary to laser or micro-dermabrasion, chemical peeling does not depend on machines for its effectiveness given that its formulation acts out and solves the problem once they are dispensed by a dermatologist since it contains active ingredients that act in synergy with the body’s aqueous system. One can get chemoexfoliation not just in the face, but other parts as well, like the neck, the back areas, and even hands.

With Enerpeel, a chemoexfoliation can treat keratosis, chrono/photoaging and hyperpigmented lesions or what is popularly known as liver spots in just minutes.

ENERPEEL CHEMICAL PEELS

Chemical skin peels are effective skin treatments used to improve and smooth out the surface of the facial skin. A chemical solution is applied to gently remove the top layer of skin from the patient’s treatment area – usually the face, neck or hands – taking blemishes and signs of ageing with it and promoting skin cell renewal. Peels are a popular option to remove fine lines and wrinkles and to heal skin that has been damaged in other ways.

Superficial chemical peels are a good option for many people as they have a gentler effect and do not give visible skin peeling, inflammation or significant redness compared to medium and deep chemical peels. They can be used on many skin types, with little or no “down time”.

The latest Enerpeel® technology, is a patented carrier solution which restrains the acids activity until it is absorbed to accelerate through the skin, enhancing its activity.

Enerpeel® means uniform and enhanced absorption of the active ingredients; with two to three fold improved skin penetration.

The result:

1) Less surface trauma.
2) Faster surface recovery with erythema reducing rapidly.
3) Enhanced remodeling/collagen stimulation.

FAQsWhat Happens During a Chemical Peel?
During a chemical peel, the patient’s treatment area will be cleansed thoroughly, and the chemical peel is applied to the skin using a gentle brush. After treatment, a soothing cream is applied, and sun protection is reinforced.

Does it hurt?
Some patients will experience a mild tingling sensation for five to ten minutes, which can be followed by a stinging sensation. These are usually temporary.

Who May Benefit from a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels can be used to treat a wide range of problems, and are not just an anti-ageing solution. Chemical peels are commonly used to reduce and treat:

Acne
Fine Lines and Wrinkles
Age Spots, Freckles and Dark Spots
Dehydrated, Dull Skin
Mild Scars
Rough Skin Texture

How Many Peels Do I Need?
Whilst you may see some minor benefits after a single peel, doctors recommend a course of about 4 peels, each 1 week apart as the full benefits of the peel builds up over a course of treatments.

Is it safe?
Yes, chemical peels are generally very safe. Some people – those who take birth control pills or fall pregnant after the treatment – may be at risk of experiencing a colour change in their skin after the procedure, but this should be fully explored and discussed at consultation.

Treatment starts from $180 per session at various aesthetics clinics.

There are many types of Enerpeels of which I’ve tried JR and MA.

Enerpeel® for the Eyes and LipsEnerpeel® EL is a gel-based solution that is especially designed for the sensitive eye and lip areas. At FreshSkin we  increase the concentration by layering the product/ This allows us to achieve similar result as we would with a high strength acid, but without the irritation and redness.

Enerpeel® by MAEnerpeel® MA is a great “all purpose” peel.   It is a non-aggressive, yet high performing treatment that can be used in all seasons and with any skin type and is especially effective on Rosacea prone skin.

Enerpeel® by SASalicylic Acid 30%

This skin peel is specifically designed for acne sufferers. Its oil production reducing effect, along with two other active ingredients – triethyl citrate and ethyl linoleate – have been shown to reduce the four main visible signs of acne. This skin peel is particularly effective during the inflammatory phase of acne that is characterised by papules and pustules.

Enerpeel®PAEnerpeel® PA contain several solutions that are effective at decreasing fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of premature skin aging as well as seborrhea, mild hyperpigmentation and in cases of stubborn acne.

Enerpeel®JREnerpeel® JR contains salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol, (Jessner’s formula) but utilizing Glytone’s ENERPEEL technology allowing for a superficial to medium exfoliation and very little downtime. Enerpeel® JR is very helpful at improving hyperpigmentation and melasma, and leaves the skin looking  younger,  tighter and “fresher” than before.

There’s also Enerpeel for eyelids

Here’s a video that illustrates how it works
